Roger defeats Nadal and books |final spot

18.03.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger won the 28th encounter with Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4 and will now play John Isner in Sunday's final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

The match started nearly three hours late because of rain, conditions were very windy and temperatures plunged. "I had a good day. It was a great match in tough conditions," Roger said. "It was so difficult but man I couldn't be more happy. I played amazing. I didn't expect myself to play so well, and this is sometimes when you can pull off the biggest wins of your career. That's where I'm happy I gave myself a chance this week."

Roger was extremely efficient, converting the three break-points he had right upon the first attempt. He was even serving for victory at 5-2 in the second set when Nadal broke his serve. But only two games and a rain-delay later he made everything clear with a final ace.

Roger will play John Isner in Sunday's final. He leads the head-to-head against the American 2-1. Roger had lost the last Davis Cup match on clay in Switzerland just a few weeks ago.

The good thing is that where maybe last year players regarded you as beatable, now they will look at you as the man in form, with already 2 titles to his name this season, thrashing his Nemesis Nadal.
I couldn't be happier and I have watched that match already 2 times by now :-)

For the final I wish you all the very very best of luck in every aspect.

I am not sure anyone would seriously recommend such a preparation, but in this case it seemed to work perfectly. Congratulations on an excellent performance and reaching the finals in IW again after many years. What you have demonstrated last week is how tough you are, what a great professional you are and that being a little under the weather so to speak doesn't necessarily mean that you will have a bad tournament. Unbelievable accomplishment.

Hello Roger,
You and Mirka and the team must have had a laugh about what seemed to be the best preparation for beating Nadal in the SF of Indian Wells: get the flu, don't practise at all or just a little bit, lose the first set to two young and upcoming players that you never played before, wait more than three hours because of the rain and finally play your match in extremely windy conditions with a little rain delay on match point :-).

Réalise l'inimaginable... Un nouveau règne sans partage à la tete du classement!

Congratulation Roger for the mental display during the game and the important moment of it... Congratulation for the incredible fitness and footwork and the hard work it comes from... Congratulation for the mental clarity and shoot selection and strategic play... Vraiment bravo pour tout!!!
