Madrid: the draw

07.05.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

The draw for the 11th edition of the Mutua Madrid Open is out. The tournament will be played on blue (!) clay and 16 out of the 20 best players in the world have confirmed their participation.
For his first tournament on clay this season, Roger is in the same half of the draw as the world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
Our champ will play his opening match against the winner of the match between Milos Raonic (CAN, 23) and David Nalbandian (ARG, 43). In the next round he could meet Richard Gasquet (FRA, 18), before either facing David Ferrer (ESP, 6) or Nicolas Almagro (ESP, 13) in the quarters.
Roger reached the semifinals in Madrid in each of the last six years, including a victory in 2009 and two finals in 2007 and 2010.

☆Will start the season show incredible tennis. We were longing to see our champion flying aces with his powerful strokes, forehand, backhand, volleys is unlike anything ever seen in sports, fantastic is, without exaggeration but a reality, our great lion did tennis into something fascinating, always played and continues to throw your tennis splendid and surprising, each new game tournament and everything is renewed. ☆

**LITTLEFELIX, dear fan, what do you mean by "low opportunity to win against Nadal or Djokovic"? Have we not seen both these players defeated recently? It is only the draw that I don't care for, as its randomnes seems oddly to favor some, and not the other. And it will be a matter of pacing to peak this year, I think. There no one to surpass Roger game: he is still ad will always be in is own class. So let the year play out, and we shall see some great surprises.

Health, luck, Roger! I was watching the court, trying to see how it behaves, this new blue clay. It appears to be slippery, but I haven't seen that it is as amenable to sliding. (A contrast to Roland Garros?) How this tournament would aspire to be another slam is beyond me. Winning with two sets is not enough: actually, even for the 1000 points, which seems high for what looks like some 500 tournaments. Gauge your game, the court, and opponents well! Godspeed--happy to see you!
