Roger battles through

09.05.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger came from a set down to beat Milos Raonic 4-6 7-5 7-6 (7-4) in the second round of the Madrid Masters today.

Roger had a rough day today, especially due to the young Canadian's serve - he fired 21 aces in a match that lasted just over two hours. Raonic reached a 100%-quote on points won upon first serve that landed in the field. Roger only saw his first break point towards the end of the second set. Fortunately, he improved on his own serve gradually throughout the match and was eventually able to wrap everything up in the tie-breaker.

Roger will now meet Richard Gasquet (ATP 18) in the third round in Spain's capital. Our champ won nine out of the eleven matches the two have played - losing 2 out of 3 on clay, though.

..it looks like a long break is not always a good choice to start then with a big tournament, more so for clay... but finally everything was ok... Raonic is a very good and fairplay player... Roger, you must be more agressive otherwise it will be very hard to reach the title... see you in final, good luck !

Wow what a match! Unusual to see Roger get through with losing less points but all the same it doesn't matter. Glad to see him through to the next round and good luck against Gasquet.

Congratulations again Roger.
This was a good match for you, to get your rythm and toughness up, seeing you have been off the courts for five weeks. To come out and play Raonic, who you've only played once before and who has a massive serve-I admire your fightling spirit and will to overcome him. Your experience carried you through.

Phew - I was a bit worried for a while, but your calmness and experience, and your superb play enabled you to win the match. This was indeed a tough opener after 5 weeks off, but you shone through thankfully. Good luck against Gasquet. Love, Liz x
