Roger breaks Connors' record

30.05.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger beat Romania's Adrian Ungur 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3, today to book his spot in the third round at Roland Garros and also pass Jimmy Connors' record of 233 wins at majors!

"I expect myself to win and I usually manage to do it. It's not like that at the start of your career when you think you are good enough but you are not that good yet," Roger said after the match.

Roger was clearly in command in the first two sets, making a speedy way to victory today. But as the third set went into the tie-break Ungur first saved two match points to then come alive and take the match into a fourth set. But Roger soon managed his first break and left the Romanian no more room to catch up, wrapping everything up nicely after 2 hours 27 minutes.

Roger will face either Slovakia's Martin Klizan (ATP 70) or Nicolas Mahut (ATP 89) of France for a place in the last 16.

Congratulations on 234 GS match victories and another record bites the dust at your feet. There'll be no records for any one else to break soon! Perhaps that's why the concentration slipped in that 3rd set (although it has to be said that Unger looked as though he'd found some form he never knew he had). Altogether great match and good win. Onwards to 3rd round - good luck for that gorgeous man, xxxxx

Congratulations Roger, on the record and the win. Never thought you would lose the match but I felt it should not have gone to 4 sets. I am assuming and hoping that you will get more into your game as you start meeting the higher ranked players.
Go for it Roger, you can do it and we will be cheering you all the way. Allez!
