Roger breaks Connors' record

30.05.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger beat Romania's Adrian Ungur 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3, today to book his spot in the third round at Roland Garros and also pass Jimmy Connors' record of 233 wins at majors!

"I expect myself to win and I usually manage to do it. It's not like that at the start of your career when you think you are good enough but you are not that good yet," Roger said after the match.

Roger was clearly in command in the first two sets, making a speedy way to victory today. But as the third set went into the tie-break Ungur first saved two match points to then come alive and take the match into a fourth set. But Roger soon managed his first break and left the Romanian no more room to catch up, wrapping everything up nicely after 2 hours 27 minutes.

Roger will face either Slovakia's Martin Klizan (ATP 70) or Nicolas Mahut (ATP 89) of France for a place in the last 16.

Turns out it was 'kids day' when I was at RG. Still my comment still stands - when was there ever a kids day at Wimbledon?

Well done Rog', congratulation on record breaking win!

I am totally agree with some of comments that you need to take more time before serving and between serves, it gives you more time for preparation for better serve. You are a little bit rush to serve...so i also believe you will serve better if you don't rush.

Long live the KING!!!!!!!

All the best against Nicolas tomorrow Roger, Ungur seemed a very good player, had no probs reading your serve which is surprising. Have a good match and try to stay focussed and all should be ok. I'll be watching and cheering you on. Lots of love as ever, xxx

I haven't seen the stats, but my feeling was you were getting lots of first serves in, yet he got them back! Great win anyway and I wish I could see you play Mahut, another great Frenchman, but sadly I'm back in London now.
Bonne chance in the next round

We came to Paris for this match and had a fabulous day. I love the French crowd. Wimbledon is a bit stuffy by comparison and there were loads of kids, many clealry from tennis clubs. No wonder the French have so many men in the top 100. You played some wonderful tennis, but Ungur was fabulous too. You shouldn't really have let the 3rd set slip, but one thing I noticed was his return of serve was so good at times that he nullified your serve - contd.
