Roger battles through

01.06.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger fought a few ups and downs against Nicolas Mahut today, eventually booking a spot in the round of the last 16 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.

Roger made an excellent start, breezing through the opening set. In the second, Mahut converted his first break point in the 10th game to take the set. Roger reacted right away, taking the next set easily after a first break in the third game. Seemingly on course, Roger then took a slight detour in the final set after saving a break point in the sixth game to then secure a break himself straight after - only for Mahut to break back. But Roger wrapped everything up with one more break and a final solid service game.

In round four at Roland Garros, Roger will meet David Goffin (ATP 109) for the first time. The Belgian entered the draw as a "Lucky Loser".

Thank you, 1Fed1--comments appreciated.
Mahut did play a great game
Even though we ,as fans we like to see Roger win, this will not always be, as with ANY player no matter how well he or she plays there is always the other player who on a given day can beat you--that is the beauty of sport.
The only predictability of sport is the unpredictability of the result!

Dutchlady a great post-- so true of Roger, always interesting, unknown opponents.

Hello Roger,

In this match Mahut showed why he has been able to play that longest match against John Isner at Wimbledon a few years ago. He has a good serve and good tactics, good hands and a lot of experience and he doesn't give up. Clearly a far more dangerous opponent than his ranking would suggest. Congratulations! I am looking forward to your match against that young man Goffin. Always interesting, unknown opponents. I wish you all the very best for that match.

*Hughsie* you always speak good sense. I thought Mahut played a great game - certainly much better than he's played of late: if he played like that every match, he would be far higher in the rankings. It was a very entertaining match; far better than banging away at the baseline (soooo boring). Good luck against Goffin Rog. Haven't seen him play, but he's obviously got something; it's not just luck. Love, xxxxx

Not the easiest of matches, but he played very well - well done! Best of luck against Goffin!
