Roger battles through

01.06.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger fought a few ups and downs against Nicolas Mahut today, eventually booking a spot in the round of the last 16 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.

Roger made an excellent start, breezing through the opening set. In the second, Mahut converted his first break point in the 10th game to take the set. Roger reacted right away, taking the next set easily after a first break in the third game. Seemingly on course, Roger then took a slight detour in the final set after saving a break point in the sixth game to then secure a break himself straight after - only for Mahut to break back. But Roger wrapped everything up with one more break and a final solid service game.

In round four at Roland Garros, Roger will meet David Goffin (ATP 109) for the first time. The Belgian entered the draw as a "Lucky Loser".

Good to see you working your way into week two Roger, hopefully without any increase in aches and pains. I know you're the master at pacing yourself so I'm looking forward to every match to come and as always loving the chance to see your amazing and beautiful play!

That was really exciting and fun to watch (especially after I knew you'd won!)
You had some great rallies - loved the ones where you were smashing and moving Mahut from left to right - and that one where he charged to the net, and you smashed it away (without hitting him - such a gentleman!) Mahut is a big guy! I hope Raonic gets to give Nadal a big challenge! and Del Potro and Berdych have a long match!

I have just taken a look at the draws at Roland Garros. If it weren't for its irritanting frequency, I would call it bad luck for Federer and lucky for Nadal. Their most likely opponents going into the final are:
Federer: Goffin, Del Potro/Berdych, Djokovic, Nadal
Nadal: Schwank, Monaco/Raonic, Almagro, Ferrer, Djokovic/Federer

Look at Federer's potential last three matches and compare them to Nadal's. Federer will have to play a Grand Slam winner in 2 (and probably all 3) cases, Nadal only in the final. Guess who's going to preserve a precious lot of energy for the final? And why is it that Federer and Djokovic always have to eliminate each other so Nadal only has to face one of them in big tournaments?

Bravo ! and off to the fourth round. I, unfortunately, cannot see your matches (in the US with terminal illness in the family) but...

Best of luck in your match against David Goffin.

With you always.

Great match Rog, very entertaining. A bit of a blip, but Mahut can be a dangerous player when he gets the bit between his teeth. Didn't take that long anyway, so good practice and you can have a rest for a couple of days. Love as always, xxxxxxx
