Roger through in four sets

02.07.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger has reached the quarters in Wimbledon after a 7-6(1), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over Xavier Malisse today - his 33rd successive Grand Slam quarterfinal!

Roger seemed in trouble after taking a 4-3 lead in the first set as he had to leave the court for a medical time-out. After that, he went on to take the set in a tie-breaker before play had to be suspended due to rain for 40 minutes. The break seemed to suit Roger well, as he then broke Malisse three times in the second set, taking it 6-1. Set number three went to the Belgian as Roger had to drop his serve. Falling behind due to another break in the fourth set, Roger then came back to break Malisse in the fourth game to level and once more for a 4-2 lead to then wrap everything up nicely after two hours and 11 minutes.

After his 850th career triumph today, Roger will either play Mikhail Youzhny or Denis Istomin on Wednesday for a place in the semis.

Dear roger, wish u r fully fit and easily pass youzhny today. i kind of like the way u played with mallise in first 2 sets. there were a lot of shaped shots seem like an old day tennis style was being played. i agree with your saying that u r proud of in-ur -generation players mostly 30 up right now. good luck for today.

Like all your fans I am hoping that your seeming unconcern in regard to your back means that you will be OK to play. You played a very clever match against Malisse, you used your fantastic tennis brain and pinpoint accuracy to achieve the win relatively easily: you are without doubt a real champion and deserve all the admiration you get from players and fans. All the very, very best for this match, please take care, love xxxxx
