Roger to play Djokovic
Roger will play defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semis of Wimbledon after defeating Mikhail Youzhny with ease 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 today.
“I played great out there today,” Roger said. “My game suits up well against him. It was obviously a tough situation out there for him. I’m extremely happy to be back in the semi-finals here at Wimbledon."
Roger cruised to a 14th win in 14 meetings against Youzhny today, showing no signs of the back pain which had bothered him in the fourth round against Xavier Malisse. He left Youzhny hardly any chances, winning the point on his first serve 88 percent of the time.
“I think it helps when royalty shows up and other legends of the game come to see me play. I think it’s inspiring. I’m happy they came to support tennis and support me. It was very special,” Roger said about the Centre Court audience that included Prince William and Kate, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Rod Laver, all sitting in the Royal Box.
Roger will now play Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Roger still has a 14-12 edge against the current world number one. The two have met in Grand Slam semifinals five times in the past two years, with Djokovic winning four of those matches. They have never played each other at Wimbledon so far.
