Roger books spot in quarters

Roger booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the London Olympics with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin today.

Even though Roger was not at his absolute best, he secured a clear victory today in his quest for a first gold medal in the singles. Play only started after a rain delay of over an hour. Roger found an excellent start, breaking right in the second game. But his 3-0 lead then melted as Istomin broke back and Roger had to save two break points at 5-5 to then finally go all the way, securing the set with his third set point. Another early break in the second set was then enough for our champ to wrap up the encounter after 1 hour and 21 minutes. 

Roger will now play John Isner or Janko Tipsarevic in the quarter-finals.

I'm sorry for your loss in doubles, but you'll have more time to prepare for the match against Isner.

Bravo, Roger! After all that waiting. You played well: there was no dout. I rejoice in your victory. As for the next round, I don't like those "shootout" type matches, but you can finesse Isner for a victory for certain, and Tipsarevic, plays like a wildboar, so don't let him stretch you...in so another rival can take advantage. Send him off, in no uncertain terms! It was good to see you play: I've been waiting and not liking the scheduling and court allotments. Follow unthinkingly intuition.Ya!

Dònt worry about doubles....Of course, it woud be nice to see the swiss team in next round, but it´s too much all the day playing, with bad weather, matches postponed...

What a shame about the doubles Roger. I really felt you should have won that second set. Upto then Fedrinka were doing well. Never mind, it does mean you can concentrate on the singles, which for you is probably good. As the opposition gets tougher in the next few days you will have all your focus and energy to combat them with. Good luck for the next match. A tricky match but both possible opponents are well known to you. Come on Roger, go for it!
