Olympic semifinals

02.08.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger beat John Isner 6-4, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinals of the Olympic tennis tournament today - bringing him just one more win away from a first Olympic medal in singles.

"Being in the medal matches, at least I'll get two shots," Roger said. "That's why I looked at this match as a final. You can imagine the relief and happiness I feel right now."

Isner's serve kept Roger working hard, but our champ eventually found a way through in the ninth game of the first set. But Roger had to keep going strong as he still had to save a break point himself before then serving out the set. The second set also proved a tight run, going into a tie-break - with Roger getting a stroke of luck in just the right moment.

Our world number one will play Juan Martin del Potro in the semis on Friday. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will play each other in the other semifinal.

I'm glad now that you don't have to play any doubles match before the final, and can rest. Having won a Gold medal in an event, or not having won it, makes a big difference, but winning once vs winning twice, is not much of a difference.

PS: I didn't "many" literally, when I said many other 5 set matches. There were some. Truth be told, we think of them many times, treating them like puzzles to be solved. The process of working through a puzzle and successfully finding a solution is very rewarding. You understand.

With your form and current level of endurance, the Australian Open match with Safin, the Nadal French Open Final where you jumped out to a fast lead and many other similar 5 set matches --- you would win them all instead of losing.
You can free yourself from the pressure of winning the first set.
Winning the first set doesn't guarantee winning the match, but winning the final set does.
