Roger Federer dominates Novak Djokovic at Cincinnati (LA Times)

Roger Federer finds a lot to like about Cincinnati — the big crowds for his matches, the quiet time away from the court, the way his game seems to come together on the fast, blue courts. It probably helps that he often takes home the trophy too.

Make it five for Federer.

The world's top-ranked player won a record fifth Cincinnati title Sunday, dominating second-ranked Novak Djokovic in an unprecedented way at the start of a 6-0, 7-6 (7) win for the Western & Southern Open championship in suburban Mason, Ohio. The 31-year-old Swiss star has enjoyed many of his one-week visits. None was better than the latest.

Federer again the man to beat (Washington Examiner)

At the beginning of the year, Novak Djokovic was on the verge of making tennis history, much of it at the expense of supposedly declining Roger Federer. Instead, Rod Laver lives on as the last male to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time. And Federer has a chance to cap yet another extraordinary season, one in which his near walkover loss to Andy Murray in the gold-medal match at the Olympics will go down as only a tiny blemish.

Should Federer and Serena Williams both successfully follow their Wimbledon titles by winning at the U.S. Open, it will be the first time that both tournaments had the same champions since Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf in 1995. Federer last won both tournaments in the same year in 2007, proof of just how long he has maintained his place among the sport's elite.

That form shows no sign of waning. With his dominant 6-0, 7-6 (7) victory over Djokovic on Sunday to claim a record fifth title in Cincinnati, Federer ensured he will be the favorite in New York for more reasons than simply the absence of injured Rafael Nadal. It was the first time in 28 matches between Federer and Djokovic that either one had won a set 6-0.

Federer heads to US Open in ominous form (sportlive.co.za)

World number one Roger Federer heads to the US Open with a sixth tournament win of the year to his name, no evident fitness problems and little sign that his Olympic defeat by Andy Murray has had any adverse effect on his confidence.

The Wimbledon champion came to Cincinnati aiming to fine-tuning his game ahead of Flushing Meadows and showed with his classy performances that there is not much to adjust as he looks for a record-extending 18th grand slam. The Swiss did not concede a break of serve in winning the tournament and securing his record fifth title at Cincinnati against the world number two Novak Djokovic 6-0 7-6 on Sunday.

“There is no doubt about it beating Novak in a final makes it extra special but then also (it was about) the reaction after losing in the Wimbledon (Olympic) final — to play a great finals after playing a not very good one at the Olympics where I went on to lose nine games in a row,” he said. “I came here and never dropped my serve. That’s the kind of reaction I want to see from myself. I didn’t have a letdown.”

Roger Federer Should Be Favorite for U.S. Open Title: Fan's Take (yahoo sports)

Roger Federer is having a very, very good year. As evidenced by his decisive 6-0, 7-6 victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Federer's form is still as sharp as it's been over this entire season. However Federer has found this fountain of youth, he is still managing to draw from it. Considering how well he played today, I can't imagine Federer not being the overwhelming favorite heading into the U.S. Open starting on August 27.

Considering that his personal nemesis, Rafael Nadal, is indefinitely out due to injury, there is no one who is capable of defeating Federer the way he is playing right now. I would have said Djokovic could have given him a run for his money today, but the Serbian looked lethargic and completely uninterested during the first set. How else can you explain getting broken three straight times in a tournament final in the FIRST set? Djokovic finally woke up and managed to hold his serve in the second set and finally provided some decent tennis to watch, but in the end Federer was the one who seemed to want it far more and was able to close it out in a tie-breaker.

I've been worried that Federer's excellent year would ultimately wear him out before the season was over, and I still think that's a concern now that the hardcourt season has started. However, he simply looked years younger out there on the court today. He was moving well, looked fit, but most importantly still exhibiting that ultra-cool confidence that makes his fans love him so much. It helps when you're winning 75% of your service points over an opponent who is supposedly one of the best returners in the game today. Based upon how easily and effortlessly he took care of Djokovic today, I actually believe now that Federer can continue playing like for the rest of the season.

Routing Djokovic, Federer Rolls On (New York Times)

Well over a decade into his career, Roger Federer has achieved the rare sort of successes that surpass even childhood dreams.

“When I was a kid, I wasn’t thinking of winning five Cincinnatis,” Federer said after his semifinal win Saturday over his Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka. “But then again, here I am in this great situation being able to do it — the first man ever.”

I don’t like the way USO front webpage uses the phrase “SF features…”, just to sell tickets. Tsonga & Murray are in the same 1/4s. At Wimby, Tsonga could likely have beaten Murray but for the very partisan crowd support. At USO, that kind of partisanship won’t be there. Without that kind of partisanship, Murray might very well have not won the Olympics. Plus, Murray played very poorly at Cincinnati. Maybe some form of letdown. To say Sharapova & Azarenka will meet at semi, is equally pr
