Roger stunning in opener

28.08.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger produced a great display in the opening round of the US open, dismissing Donald Young (ATP 81) 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

"I think it was a good start in difficult conditions," Roger said. "He was a talented opponent and I'd never played him before but it was good."

Our champion did not get distracted by the windy and humid conditions at Flushing Meadows, clearly dominating the match and making it clear that he was aiming for a fast first-round victory.

After 3-3, he took all further games in the opening set. Improving even more, the second also went onto his account with ease 6-2. Young did manage a break in the thrid set, but Roger finally secured the match upon his third match-ball after 94 minutes of play.

Roger will now play Germany's Björn Phau (ATP 83).

Hello Roger
Well done on winning your 1sr round match--never easy is it? Often an opponent that one does not know or played against.Yesterday am [our time] it was very humid[not often one sees Roger sweating ++]windy and a rather talented Donald Young. But the world no1 was in complete control with some brilliant shots. Enjoyable match.
Best wishes for round 2
Kindest regards
Margaret
