Switzerland in round two

11.02.2008 | Tennis

The Swiss Davis Cup team celebrated a 4-1 victory against Poland in the Europe/Africa zone yesterday.

The victories of Stéphane Bohli against Dawid Olejniczak (ATP 306) - 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-4 - as well as Stanislas Wawrinka against Blazej Koniusz (ATP 524) - 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 - meant a perfect start into the rubber. Yves Allegro and Michael Lammer faced a difficult task in the doubles on Saturday: playing world numbers 22 and 23 of the doubles world-ranking. They did a great job and made everything clear for Switzerland on the second day of play with a 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory over the Polish team with Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

On Sunday both matches were brought to an end early due to injuries on both sides. It was Michi Lammer of the Swiss team who had to be carried off the court by his team-mates. He will have to rest for 4 to 6 weeks due to a sprained ankle.

The Swiss will now play the Republic of Belarus from April 11 to 13 in Minsk for a spot in the World Group playoffs in September.
