Roger loses Basel final

28.10.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 2

A scattering of errors in the final tie break of the final set cost our champ the Basel Open Final 4-6,7-6,6-7 against the No 2 del Potro today. This was an exciting match that swayed back and forth and was completely absorbing with some very high quality tennis.

Roger, who won the event in five of the past six years, was seeking his 77th career title to tie John McEnroe at fourth on the Open Era list. Del Potro ended a six-match losing streak against our top-ranked champ, which also included a five-set defeat at the French Open."You deserved it," Roger told his opponent on court. "You had a couple of tough losses against me this year and I'm really happy for you." Del Potro's victory in 2 hours, 44 minutes compared to his 4-hour, 26-minute defeat at the Olympics -the longest three-set match in history - when Roger won the decider 19-17 on Centre Court, Wimbledon. As he did at Roland Garros and the Olympics, Del Potro took the first set, breaking Roger’s serve in the fifth game after a 21 shot rally. Our champ struggled briefly with his ground strokes, netting two forehands and a backhand to give Del Potro the lead. The second-seeded Del Potro relied on solid serving and unleashed blistering forehands when needed. He took his first set point chance when Roger sent a backhand wide. Both players wasted their only break chances in the second set, which hinged on a tense service game at 5-5 by Roger. Facing break point, Roger struck a brilliant forehand crosscourt winner then saw Del Potro slip up by netting a sliced backhand on the next point.Roger controlled the tiebreaker and punched the air when he levelled the match, as Del Potro let a backhand drift wide.Roger held three break points at 1-1 in the deciding set, but Del Potro saved them all before firing an ace to win the game.A wild forehand from our champ let another break chance slip in the seventh game, which Del Potro clinched with another ace. Roger was electrifying at 5-6 down and struck three straight aces to force another tie-breaker.Roger then netted a topspin forehand giving del Potro his first match-point chance on another wayward forehand from the top-seeded Roger. In spite of the result not going Roger’s way, it was a match that was full of quality & entertaining tennis from both men.

Commiserations, Roger. It was a close match and tie breaks are always a lottery. Good to know you will still be No 1 for a further week - 302 weeks is a nice round number! Have a good rest, and best of luck for the end of year tour finals in London - I will be keeping my fingers crossed that you can retain your title. That would be a great way to end a record breaking year for you! xx

So serene, but you are human. Thank God ! For awhile with all the stunning tennis that you have been playing during your career, I was beginning to think you were an alien. Just kidding. Just wanted to make you smile.

Wise decision on letting Paris go. Leave them yearning. The body at times needs to rest. The definition of sleep: the temporary suspension of consciousness, during which the powers of the body are restored. Isn't that a beautiful?

A pleasure seeing you play last week. (Part II

Today i tried to watch something of the Paris Masters but without you is not tennis, is just a couple of guys with rackets trying to pass a ball above a net. Sorry from yesterdays loss but happy to know that you and Severin now have the perfect venue to play the Checs in next years Davis cup, since you are the ace you should play in -Basel, do not touch the court,it suits you. I know that now you are the underdog for london, like in 2010, i cannot recall what happenned then, oh, yes you rocked

Well, you have five titles in Basel, an amazing feat. You gave it your best shot and Del Potro was in good form. That he 'is honoured to be on the same court with you' is a nice comment. I cannot help feel that there were other things going on with you, before and during the final. I have never seen you so animated before...are you taking method (Stanislavski) acting classes? Thinking of another career after tennis? You are usually so Buddha-like or Björn Borg-like on the court. (Part I of II)

i can't really care that you didn't win basel. you have 5 titles. nothing to prove there. poor delpo lost to you 6 times already this year so nothing to prove there either. john mcenroe said he hated being #1 because every time you step on court people expect you to kill and it can't happen every time. i think that is how fans feel about you and basel. it was just delpo,s day. and that's tennis. delighted we saw you all week. thank you. glad you skipped paris. we'll be cheering for WTF #7.
