Roger loses London final

12.11.2012 | Tennis, Starseite 2

A scintillating and truly exciting game lasting 2hr.14 minutes with some of the most impressive tennis seen this year. Unfortunately the result went against our Champ Roger 6-7(6), 5-7 but he played his part in producing a final to go down in history with a worthy opponent in Djokovic.

'I cannot play much better than I did today so I am very pleased."  This was Roger speaking after he had lost out 6-7 (6-8) ,5-7 to Novak Djokovic last night in the O2 arena,London. It was a fascinating game and a fitting end to a high quality championship.
Roger continued "Congratulations to Novak on an amazing year and tournament, you're the best”. Roger indeed started well, winning the opening nine points and 12 of the first 14 to take a 3-0 lead. He then won the first point of the fourth game, but Djokovic finally held his serve — and soon broke back.In the ninth game, Djokovic broke again to serve for the set at 5-4, but our Champ evened the score and forced the tiebreaker.

"I shouldn't have been broken as often as I was broken today," said Roger, who lost his serve twice in each set. "But then again, that obviously has something to do with Novak, as well. Obviously I was going to try to go after my shots and not just hand it to him. That's just how I play tennis," said Roger. "If I have 80 errors and I win the match, I don't care. I really don't. Maybe a bit of regret because I had the lead twice first before him," said the two-time defending champion. "At the end of the day, that doesn't matter. You have to get over the finish line in the set and then obviously at the match. He was better at that today."

To start the second set, Roger broke Djokovic and then held all the way to 5-3. A game later and serving for the set, he had two set points but  put a forehand wide and  then another into the net.The breaker included a candidate for the best point of the year as Djokovic, on set point, lunged to clip a diving Roger volley past his opponent, only for the Swiss to contort his body and fire a forehand winner past the Serb from an impossibly acute angle. Two more mistakes from our Champ put Djokovic back on serve and back on track for the title. The Serb closed it out with the backhand passing winner. An amazing game had finished.

But on the other hand, I want to see him playing for many years, I don't want to see him retire. That would be the end of tennis for me, because all of this players are boring, except for example Gasquet, Dimitrov. As you can see, they can't win big matches, they cannot be in the top 10, not to mention that they will never be like Fed, because it is impossible with their style of play. And that is sad. Their style is beautiful, not as Rogers, but much much better to watch then Djoko, Rafa

I am fine, thank you. And how are you ? I agree with you. He deserved more, especially with his style of play. Every beautiful point is his point. I do not want to be pesimistic, but I am afraid if he will continue to play and the courts will be slow as they are right now, his head to head against Djoko, Rafa and Andy will be negative. So then his haters will have the arguments to say it is certain that he cannot be the greatest player in history, and that is very sad.

All what counts for me , is that Roger can still win against world no.1 at age 31
Really wanted him to win as always I do
So please Roger , still play incredible tennis in 2013
Just one thing , I think you can not control your nerve when you are under pressure ,please work on that and you will find yourself better
That's my opinion...always adore you

Really? he has been asking for faster courts for a long time?? I must miss it. if that s true so it s hopeless cos ATP never took his ask into account and keep slowing the courts.

Faster courts? If it means eliminating mindless, baseline slugging and more 'Roger like' tennis, bring them on! I want to watch an intelligent, imaginative game of tennis, not a competition of who can hit the ball longest and hardest! If all the courts varied in speed then it would be more interesting for spectators and players alike. As for the miserable lot saying Roger only wants it because he is getting less physically able. Roger has been saying it for a long time! Have a nice holiday Rog!

Hi Roger
With tear filled eyes I'm writing this mail, not because you've lost but the pleasure I got from my soul watching you play on Monday. It saddens me realising you will retire one day, but then I am optimistic knowing your daughters will keep your legacy alive one day(wishfull thinking) and you know of cause who I will be chanting for on the day. South Africa LOVES YOU Roger, and I look forward to watch you play in 2013.You're the best EVER!!!!!

Dear Roger I wonder when you say that even if you make 80 errors and win the match you don't care.I can't understand how you can win by gifting 80 free points to your opponents when the matches between the top players are so close that even 2 to 3 points can determine the outcome of the match.I don't know if you care about winning or not but your millions of fans get devastated when you lose big matches. So please think about us also when you play
