Roger in semis after |five-set thriller

23.01.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

A challenging, thrilling, brilliant shot making, cliff hanger of a match that saw our Roger come through 7-6,4-6,7-6,3-6,6-3.  "The whole match was tough. Any set could have gone either way," he said. "You never know what Jo's going to come up with. It was a pleasure to come through.I felt like I played some great tennis but Jo played great tennis too." There were times when Roger was imperious and times when Tsonga’s shot making made our champ look pedestrian. Tsonga had unleashed a series of brilliant shots to level the match at 2 sets all. He made 17 winners to Roger’s 7 in the 4th set to take it in style and set up a thrilling finish. In the end Roger’s experience, but even more his court craft, brought our champ through to a hard earned victory. The match was a stunner with no quarter given on either side – it took Roger 4 match points to close out Tsonga and win the final set 6-3 with a superb overhead smash at the 5th attempt. Our champ had been composure personified in this set and took the decisive break at 2-1 to set up an advantage he did not relinquish. This is Roger’s 10th straight semi-final in the Australian Open in his bid for an 24th Grand Slam final.

Roger has now set up the possibility of an electrifying semi-final match against the Scot Andy Murray – at the moment Murray leads 10-9 in career head to head matches.

You have been playing so well; we knew you could win this tough, close match if you kept your nerve and went for it! So exciting! Great work! Looks like you had some fun too! I wonder how Murray's nerves are .... (he still hasn't beaten you in a major)

What a match Roger! I stayed up until the wee small hours here in NZ to watch and support you. I must admit at times i could not watch, my nerves were so frayed! You must convert more break points if you can Roger, and take some of the pressure of yourself. I wish you luck against Andy, another tough match up, so stay focused and Grand Slam #18 will be yours.

Dear Roger
Congratulations! You played a tough opponnt, but was happy to win! I;m sure it could have been shorter match, but as you said, Jo had played extremely well! Bravo for thw both of you! I''m so happy you made it!Don't think that your nrxt opponent is in advantage because you played a five setter~I think you can recuperate and win on Friday! You need only a good serve!
Wish you all the best and good luck dearest Roger!
Go, Roger, goooooooooooo!

Wow Roger i am verf impressed, great match, good stamina and confidence, it will be though against murray, but rest well, and go and diamanten him, Playing with much variety, to get him go crazy and make unforced errors. You are THE champ, just two more. Take care of your body and thinkout a great tactical plan, and back up plan, to beat him. I know you can, you always save best for last, this was a great first real test and schare, you survived, and i believe you are ready for murray!!
