Roger eases through

13.02.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Our Champ opened his account in Rotterdam with a convincing win over Grega Zemlja 6-3, 6-1 in only 57 minutes. Roger is the current defending champion in this event which he has now appeared in 8 times and won twice. It took Roger only 29 minutes to get through the first set with service games that were impenetrable and he won it 6-3. The second set was no better for Zemlja and Roger was quickly up to a 3-1 lead drilling forehand winners right and left. Another weapon he employed was the odd backhand which he used sparingly but to great effect and closing out with a break in the penultimate game. This was our champ at his brilliant best.  ''Hall play is different. It's warmer, so the ball flies more and it takes a bit of getting used to,'' Roger said. ''The first ones are never easy but I'm happy to be back and playing well. I've been here and preparing for a few days, but matches are always different than training"

Nobody expects him to win though and to be honest: nobody but he himself and his coaches, friends and family WANT him to win :-). We would be happy with a good match, with you winning without having to spend too much energy, because tomorrow Benneteau awaits and he has been giving you trouble before.

Wishing you a safe ride to the stadium and all the very best for tonights match. I will be there to support you and cheer you on, together with so many other fans in Ahoy.

Today is my day off and in a few hours I will drive to Rotterdam to be there before rush hour. The weather is bad, light snow and icy rain make the roads slippery, but I hope all the fans will be able to make it to the stadium safely. Tonights match against our countryman Thiemo de Bakker hopefully gives us an entertaining evening. I saw Thiemo play you in DC in Amsterdam last September and he is a former junior World No. 1 and junior Wimbledon Champion, so he can play tennis.

We were happy to see that he was moving well, looked well tanned and fit and hit a good ball. Needless to say that he won most of the games they played. Goffin seemed to struggle with his serve, but seemed OK. I have no idea why he played so badly later that evening in his match against Nieminen.
After his practice Roger took his time to sign autographs and I got some nice pictures/videos from very close by. Lucky for him the madness wasn't as big then as I witnessed yesterday.

On Monday afternoon I came to watch the Tomic-Dimitrov match, but when a friend of mine told me that Roger would practice on Court 1 at 4 PM, I left the Center Court like so many others. I had to wait a while before I and a few others were admitted, because the stands were already packed. Once seated I saw some people leaving again, apparently they couldn't wati any longer, thus making it possible for others to come in. Roger practiced for an hour against David Goffin.

Earlier that afternoon I saw you leaving the practice court, where all the kids who where there for Kids Day tried to get an autograph. Some got it with a picture as well, others were dissappointed because they couldn't get close enough to you. Funny moment for me was when I heard a mother say to her little son: "Roger will pass by in a moment. Let's wait for him and take him home with us." :-) I think there were a lot of mothers that had that same wish ..... :-)
