Roger rushes into |next round

12.03.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Our Roger had a ‘scary’ moment yesterday – but not on court where he again showed all of his skills to romp through 6-3, 6-1 against the Croatian Ivan Dodig. Dodig’s game was full of errors including a double fault on match point which allowed our champ to wrap up the match in 61 minutes. Something slightly worrying was that Roger tweaked his back during the match but as he said:

"At the end I tweaked it a little bit, but it's not the first time it's happened in my career, it's happened during Grand Slams, during tournaments, in practice. It's just something you learn to deal with". This was our champ’s 890th career win bringing him level with Connors, Lendl and Vilas as the only men to have won that number of matches in the open era.

Oh yes – that ‘scary’ moment? A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Indian Wells. It happened before the day’s matches had begun at around 10.00 when Roger was still in the house where he is staying with his family. His family were outside but our champ was in the house and ran outside fast. “I didn’t know how long it was going to last, if it was going to get worse from there, or if the worst was already past,” he said. “It was a very strange feeling to have because you see the windows shaking and you look up and realize you’re under a structure. It was quite scary for a second there.”

Glad you and your family are okay! :)
I'm proud of you Roger, not playing your best tennis, but getting through in straights.
Keep marching on. We love you!

Congratulations! Roger, you played very well! Your serves were really good, you showed us nice net points. You are in a good shape, you can beat Wawrinka, just pay attention to your play. I don't like when you two have to play, like others hate it also.. Take a rest, I wish you good luck against your compatriot!! I'll be cheering for you. Believe in yourself as we believe in you always!! I'm so glad that you and your family are safe after the earthquake!! Love you for ever!! :))

Congratulations, Rog, on your win. Despite the sun on your eyes, the shadows, and the "tweak" in your back, not to mention the earthquake that happened earlier in the day (thanks for FB message), you made those spectacular shots and won decisively against Dodig. A true champ. And I like the orange outfit. Good luck on the next match.

Dear Roger

Well done in both your matches. Do hope your back is OK. Best of luck in the next round. I look forward to watching it late at night UK time! Always the greatest and such a pleasure to watch the elegance of your play. None of those tediously long rallies. Thank you as always for giving us all so much joy.
