Through in three sets

14.03.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Your correspondent gave up watching this ‘battle of the Swiss’ on a live feed from Indian Wells when Roger was 6-3 and 3-1 thinking (at 01.30 cet) that our champ was in control and all was well with the natural order of Swiss tennis. How wrong (as tennis proves again and again) can one be. Roger took Wawrinka to 5-4 in the second set and seemed to be comfortable but then he was broken to love and Wawrinka took the set 7-6(7) in fine style. Roger went on to take the 3rd set 7-5 when Warinka netted a forehand.

“Today it was extremely close again," our champ told reporters after coming good in a seesaw contest lasting two hours 20 minutes. "He usually plays me pretty good actually overall. Okay, I should maybe close it out in the second set, but he did well to stay in it. In the end, I don't know what gets me through. Maybe it's the experience or maybe I'm a bit more calm in those moments. I'm not sure. Today I think I was a little lucky to come through it in the end," added Roger.

Our champ has now set up a much anticipated quarter final clash with the Spanish whirlwind Nadal -  it will be their first meeting in 12 months when Roger beat Nadal in the semi-finals of the same tournament.

Boy, was that an ugly win or what? That's ok though, we'll take an ugly win over a beautiful loss any day. If it had nothing to do with your back, then let's chalk it up to Roger's one or two hideous matches of the year.. Speaking of experience, you may want to use this vast asset to close out matches decisively when you are in a position to do so. Praying that you play a diametrically opposed game today, if you are to to beat Nadal.
Best wishes and best of health

ROGER FOREVER

Wow, Roger, that was a close one. Stan played very well. I also thought you'd be through in 2 sets, but Stan hung tough. A wonderful match to come out with the win.

Hope your back is okay, treatments are helping & you're good to go today against Rafa. This will be a much anticipated match & of course I hope you will play well & win.

Good Luck ~ We'll all be cheering for you! Go get him, Rog!

Roger, congratulations for yesterday. btw, I love the small comment up, "your correspondent' is very funny. Ok, that was tough but never in doubt you would find a way. You made Stan so tired that he could not resist, it was interesting to watch. Now, onwards, our boy! Repeat the sf of last year. God bless you, Roger!

Roger: If I wasn´t a big fan of you, I probably would hate you. Because yesterday you make me feel so nervous, especially when Wawrinka took 2-1 in the 3° set. Please don't do this again. It´s a joke, of course. I can´t hate you, even if I want, and I don´t. Good luck with Nadal. See you tonight

Roger, I know you can win this match- stay focused and calm, make a few less unforced errors, make him run no matter how bad his knee is or else he would probably make you run twice as much, make your groundstrokes as fast and sharp as possible, bring that spirit in you you had 5-7 years ago. If you follow this, what, strategy? I know you would definitely win 6-0,6-0.
