Through in three sets

14.03.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Your correspondent gave up watching this ‘battle of the Swiss’ on a live feed from Indian Wells when Roger was 6-3 and 3-1 thinking (at 01.30 cet) that our champ was in control and all was well with the natural order of Swiss tennis. How wrong (as tennis proves again and again) can one be. Roger took Wawrinka to 5-4 in the second set and seemed to be comfortable but then he was broken to love and Wawrinka took the set 7-6(7) in fine style. Roger went on to take the 3rd set 7-5 when Warinka netted a forehand.

“Today it was extremely close again," our champ told reporters after coming good in a seesaw contest lasting two hours 20 minutes. "He usually plays me pretty good actually overall. Okay, I should maybe close it out in the second set, but he did well to stay in it. In the end, I don't know what gets me through. Maybe it's the experience or maybe I'm a bit more calm in those moments. I'm not sure. Today I think I was a little lucky to come through it in the end," added Roger.

Our champ has now set up a much anticipated quarter final clash with the Spanish whirlwind Nadal -  it will be their first meeting in 12 months when Roger beat Nadal in the semi-finals of the same tournament.

A good win Roger, very well done. Ideally you would have kept it to two sets, but Stan, as we know is a good fighter, all credit to him. It is a sham Stan always seems to be drawn against you Roger. I hope your back has stood up to the match. The next match you will need to be at your absolute fittest. Seems a shame that this long awaited rematch has a background of bad knee vs bad back! You can do it Roger, the fighting lion! Go for it Roger, I always believe you can beat Rafa!

Hello Roger,

We all know that you don't talk about it when something is not quite right with you physically that slows you down or makes you serve worse, but a lot of fans and the commentators noticed that you were not moving as well as you did in the 3rd set. I may be imagining things but looking at the pictures of you after the match you seemed a little "hollow eyed" and you didn't look like the winner of the match.
I hope everything is allright though and wish you all the best for the rest

Dear Roger
Congratulations! It was a difficult match to play and to watch! Thank dear God, you won, but I agree with you, you were a bit luckier! You deserve some luck, you play wonderful tennis. Hope you are healthy and fit enough for your next opponent!
Wish you all the best and good luck dearest Roger!
Go, Roger, goooooooooo!
Love, Mimi

Roger, you played well yesterday, unfortunately you could not close it out in two sets, but that is how good Stan is.

Now a difficult match. You with your backpain against Rafa with his kneepain.
But don't worry. You will win, I think in three sets, but you will NOT lose,
NOT TO RAFA.

Love you Roger, no matter what. Please hang in there. Three matches to go.
