Through in three sets

14.03.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Your correspondent gave up watching this ‘battle of the Swiss’ on a live feed from Indian Wells when Roger was 6-3 and 3-1 thinking (at 01.30 cet) that our champ was in control and all was well with the natural order of Swiss tennis. How wrong (as tennis proves again and again) can one be. Roger took Wawrinka to 5-4 in the second set and seemed to be comfortable but then he was broken to love and Wawrinka took the set 7-6(7) in fine style. Roger went on to take the 3rd set 7-5 when Warinka netted a forehand.

“Today it was extremely close again," our champ told reporters after coming good in a seesaw contest lasting two hours 20 minutes. "He usually plays me pretty good actually overall. Okay, I should maybe close it out in the second set, but he did well to stay in it. In the end, I don't know what gets me through. Maybe it's the experience or maybe I'm a bit more calm in those moments. I'm not sure. Today I think I was a little lucky to come through it in the end," added Roger.

Our champ has now set up a much anticipated quarter final clash with the Spanish whirlwind Nadal -  it will be their first meeting in 12 months when Roger beat Nadal in the semi-finals of the same tournament.

I was just reading some of the posts and like some of the fans, I will also take a break from tennis until you come back to defend Madrid. The blue clay is gone, so you remain the ONE and ONLY champ in BLUE CLAY. That title will always be yours. Enjoy your family and friends. Your team also needs a break until you start to practice.

Then go to Rafa's, Andy's and Novak's site. Just leave Roger and his real fans alone.
If he would have won, you would have praised him, but now he lost you are attacking him? That is all it takes? A loss? Then leave him alone and go to your current other hero's. And when they begin to lose, just simply go to the next one.
You guys are only Roger's fan when he is winning. Real fans STAND BY their man no matter what. Who knows, this is maybe his 2011 year, so next year will be his 201

YOU WERE, ARE AND ALWAYS WILL REMAIN SIMPLY THE BEST, BETTER THAN ALL THE REST, BETTER THAN ANYONE I HAVE EVER SEEN PLAYING TENNIS.

I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH AND RESPECT YOU SO SO MUCH MORE.
PLAYING WITH PAIN, NOT COMPLAINING, NOT WHINING. PLAYING WITH PAIN AND STILL NOT GIVING UP.

YOU ARE A ROLE MODEL, THE GOAT, THE SWISS MAESTRO, THE GENIUS AND THE ONE AND ONLY.

I AM NEVER GIVING UP ON YOU. GOOD REST FOR YOU AND YOUR BACK FOR THE TWO MONTH BREAK. YOU DESERVE IT. PRACTISE AND COME BACK STR

I am sorry you lost, Rog. You must have wanted to withdraw but you did not want to let the fans down , this being hyped up at the tournament (in my opinion, "over" hyped). But you did your best despite the injury, showed so much class and dignity, and we fans love you more for that. You deserve a really fulfilling rest to recharge and heal after a really busy year, crisscrossing the world and all that. The back will heal. God bless.
