Through in three sets

14.03.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Your correspondent gave up watching this ‘battle of the Swiss’ on a live feed from Indian Wells when Roger was 6-3 and 3-1 thinking (at 01.30 cet) that our champ was in control and all was well with the natural order of Swiss tennis. How wrong (as tennis proves again and again) can one be. Roger took Wawrinka to 5-4 in the second set and seemed to be comfortable but then he was broken to love and Wawrinka took the set 7-6(7) in fine style. Roger went on to take the 3rd set 7-5 when Warinka netted a forehand.

“Today it was extremely close again," our champ told reporters after coming good in a seesaw contest lasting two hours 20 minutes. "He usually plays me pretty good actually overall. Okay, I should maybe close it out in the second set, but he did well to stay in it. In the end, I don't know what gets me through. Maybe it's the experience or maybe I'm a bit more calm in those moments. I'm not sure. Today I think I was a little lucky to come through it in the end," added Roger.

Our champ has now set up a much anticipated quarter final clash with the Spanish whirlwind Nadal -  it will be their first meeting in 12 months when Roger beat Nadal in the semi-finals of the same tournament.

Hi Roger. Congrats!!!
Sounds like Stan surprised you a little.
He has been playing well, it was very noticeable at the Australian Open I thought. I so wished and he really deserved to win that match against the Djoker.
ALL THE BEST AGAINST NADAL.
YOU CAN DO THIS
JUST DO IT.
It would be good for your confidence to win this time.

Your wand was playing some tricks on you!!! You started to sleep 2 minutes too early, and so I had to go to sleep one hour later! It doesn't matter, as long as you win.

Your magical magic shots had a touch of astuteness, I'm so happy being able no to miss them in LIVE version!

Tonight (Swiss 3 a.m. time) I'll be there, assiduouss for great solutions vs. Nadal's high top spinned shots and lucky-bag defense.

I'll be there UP TO THE END of the match, not like our correspondent ;-)

The Swiss battle. Congratulations on your nail-biting win. Warinka is a fighter, but so are you. Brilliant tenacious effort. At match point while you have them...seize the moment, unwavering, with a steely resolve to finish.

Good luck in your match against Nadal. What an exciting quarter finals match.
With your brilliant serve & shot-making along with a relentless will to win...you will be victorious.

Always with you.

Hello Roger
Congratulations on a great win--never easy playing a friend. We watched the Hewitt/Stan match so we were aware that he[Stan] was playing very well.In addition you had a back concern. However you, the great champion that you are overcame everything to win
I loved the way that you changed your play up in so many ways thus confusing Stan-- a delight to watch
Good luck for Q/F match later today
Kindest regards
Margaret
