Out against Nadal

15.03.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

The clash of the titans at Indian Wells turned out to be a non event – unfortunately with our Roger on the losing side against Rafa Nadal 4-6, 2-6. Our Champ – always the gentleman – refused to blame the problem with his back saying: "I'm happy to be out there and able to compete, but it's obviously a small issue," he said. "That doesn't work against guys like Rafa". He added, "you could see at least I could serve full basically, and that always gives you a direction". He also said that he didn't want to talk about his back too much "because I don't like to undermine his performance, either". Rafa was just as magnanimous in victory saying "if I think that I am better than him because I beat him 19 against 10, I will be very stupid and very arrogant," he said. "This is not the case."

Roger had a miserable match against his old foe with only a slight glimmer of hope in the second set to get to 2-3 from 0-3 but Nadal took the remaining games in the set to win the match. It has to be said to Roger’s immense credit that he continued to play when obviously hampered by injury. There are a lot of players who would have retired rather than battling on never mind fashioning a break so early in the second set.

Next up will be the Mutua Madrid Open in May.

This news with the trite 'Clash of the Titans' caption is old and should only have been up for maybe 2-3 days at the most. It was poorly written in the first place.

Hallo Roger jammer dat U verloren hebt maar wanneer Jouw rug niet oke is gaat het niet, tegen niemand dan, verzorg U goed dan komt dat weer in orde.
Heel Veel geluk Roger.

I think that nowadays tennis is out and football is in. I prefer watching football nowadays. In May I prefer watching tennis again. Lots of love from Istanbul-Turkey.

CHAMPION8688: I comend you for the time you probably put in your analysis of Roger's career and motivation, but I respectfully disagree. I believe this stage Roger is in is less serious than what you think. It's a SPORT...you win some you lose some. That's all.

Your transcendent status in the world of sports (or in the pantheon of top-notched professional athletes as the leader of them all) is irreplaceable and it is irrefutably the greatest feat in the sports history. But, you are 31 and you just cannot keep winning like when you were in your prime. Maybe making some concession is good for your now.

a remote reality to you.
It’s time to take a step back and think about letting the younger players to hoist the trophies that you had been so easily collecting them and beginning your life after your brilliant and unprecedented tennis accomplishment.

about your tennis career now?
What you have been doing these last past months are a foregone tale of making us knowing that you are losing that conviction in you and the affinity for playing tennis, and that, you have the intention of easing out of the ATP tour very slowly.
The facts and the ways you are approaching the matches do not substantiate your claim of playing the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympic games and your goal of winning more grand slams that is becoming more and more a remote reality
