Roger upset in Madrid

10.05.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger suffered a 4-6, 6-1, 2-6 defeat against Kei Nishikori at the Madrid Open.

"Kei played better than I did, so the better guy won today, that's for sure. I'll sit together tonight or tomorrow with the team and discuss what the plan is for the next few days and weeks. So I'm excited for that, because clearly I have no choice but to hit the practice courts," Roger said.

Roger struggled with the conditions in Madrid as breezes and shady patches hit the court. He displayed good tennis during several phases but was not constant enough overall, battling with uncharacteristic errors. After losing the first set, he upped his game to level but lost his serve early in the decider and Nishikori broke for a third time in the match to seal victory.

I am sorry we don't get to see you again until your first match in Rome, where I hope you will have found the right feeling again. I think we were all delighted to see your cute little girls courtside, growing and getting smarter every day.
Luckily Stan is still defending the Swiss colours in Madrid, showing young gun Dimitrov that he is not there yet.
Wishing you a good preparation for and in Rome, hoping to see you well prepared for your next match in a few days.

Hello Roger,

That 3rd set came a little bit as a surprise to me. Sure, you didn't use the multiple breakpoints in the 1st set and had 1 bad service game there, but you repaired that very convincinbly in the 2nd set. I think most of us expected you to finish the job in the 3rd, but the errors came back and before we knew what hit us you were out. Somehow I felt that you never really got into that match and you looked kind of flat.
Most likely all this is just because of a lack of match praxis.

getting broken on platter! no fight. at least on break points one has to be metally and not give away.you can"t always depend on flair of your game only and remain mentally spongy

Hey Rog,
Like you said, better player on the day won the match. even though it is sad to see you lose. I will never tired of watching you play more than any player in the world. Keep up your spirit and come back strong in ROME. You fans always believe in you as I'm sure you will be fine.
Work hard, and can't wait to see you lifting another trophy.
Always believe in you and cheer for you no matter what as long as you plays.

Dear Rog, sorry about losing yesterday. I watched the match live on ESPN3 and as you said, you couldn't get your rhythmn going, despite periods of brilliant tennis esp in the second set. Nishikori serving first in the third set put you on a little disadvantage and he was playing inspired tennis. So on to Rome!

he rog no worries...i think u r in great shape physically ,may be better than last year, for 5 set matches...i think u r looking really strong physically this year and this will help u in coming slams but u need to keep working hard and improve physically as well as game wise....as far as this match was concerned i think it was up and down rythm wise may be it was because of faster conditions but i think slower rome will help u and u r favourite to win this year roland garros...BE STRONG

Oh Roger, what are we going to do with you? We still love, cherish and believe in you, but we are aware you are not getting any younger. You have shown all these young guns how to play over the years, and now you are getting older they are learning! I hope you are feeling better this morning. The important thing is for you to feel fit, healthy and you get enjoyment in your life. I am sure you can sort this out. Discuss your game, learn from it, practice hard, then return as the magician we love!
