Roger loses Rome final

19.05.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger lost the final in Rome against Rafael Nadal 1-6, 3-6 in only 68 minutes and therefore our champ is still not able to add the Rome title to his long list of trophies.

The stats of the game tell two different stories – yes they tell you that Rafa Nadal won 6-1, 6-3 but they also say that Roger had 32 unforced errors to Rafa’s 8 during a match that lasted 1 hour 8 minutes. Another telling stat was that our Roger only won 55% of his first serves – down from 73% in his match against Simone. There was a glimmer of hope in the second set when Roger won 2 games in row to go from 1-5 to 3-5 with some brilliant shot making. Unfortunately in the last game our champ had two unforced errors and at 0-40 Nadal sent down a good serve to clinch the Championship. As ever Roger was gracious at the end complementing Rafa on the way he played.

Next up are the French Open, starting next Sunday.

This is what I thought about the game. I'm glad to find an article that reflects my opinion.

VOCABULARY - IF THE SHOE FITS

Roger's best chance for a major is at Wimbledon, especially with a closed roof.
His serve can be a weapon and he can dictate the points and come to net. The rallies don't last more than 8 strokes and the ball bounces perfectly in Roger's swing pattern. His block or slice return of serves can also neutralize the points versus clay where that's suicide.
I think Roger is playing well. Sampras never got to a clay court final at the end of his career and still won majors like Wimbledon or the US.

Nadal is almost unbeatable on clay. Only Djokovic has found the way to beat Nadal on clay and Djokovic needs to be at his best to do it.
A younger Roger would have a chance on clay but clay is so slow and the ball bounces so high (especially with Nadal's spins) and it's so demanding physically. It just does not suit Roger's game today.
Not to say Roger should not give his 100% at the French because you never know, the weather can be heavy on the days he plays and that can make the courts faste

I don't think you could ever beat Nadal simply because you are mentally weak which is incurable. So just enjoy playing tennis in courts, don't bother winning or loosing. Everyone has got his limit even for a genius like yourself. Please be realistic. Do not set any goal which is unachievable.

A lot of people on here suggesting tactics !! You have to do this - do that! advising the GOAT... ??? Roger knew he was on a hiding to nothing before he walked on to the red stuff against the GOAT on clay in Rome. He is 31 people. Amazing to scramble as far as he did at that age and stage in an illustrious career. There is a natural rise and fall in tennis.. Roger was outclassed today by the younger, stronger man... and was man enough to realise this I think in his speech .
