Roger loses Rome final

19.05.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger lost the final in Rome against Rafael Nadal 1-6, 3-6 in only 68 minutes and therefore our champ is still not able to add the Rome title to his long list of trophies.

The stats of the game tell two different stories – yes they tell you that Rafa Nadal won 6-1, 6-3 but they also say that Roger had 32 unforced errors to Rafa’s 8 during a match that lasted 1 hour 8 minutes. Another telling stat was that our Roger only won 55% of his first serves – down from 73% in his match against Simone. There was a glimmer of hope in the second set when Roger won 2 games in row to go from 1-5 to 3-5 with some brilliant shot making. Unfortunately in the last game our champ had two unforced errors and at 0-40 Nadal sent down a good serve to clinch the Championship. As ever Roger was gracious at the end complementing Rafa on the way he played.

Next up are the French Open, starting next Sunday.

Looking back at that entrance and comparing it to the way you walked on court in Madrid 2009 there is a clear differenc. Back in 2009 I could see that you were confident that you were going to win. I didn't see any of this yesterday. We all may wonder why that is, but only you and your team now the answer to that. The facts show that you couldn't play as well as needed to beat Nadal. You revealed a little in your press conference and since you are allways very honest in those,

Hello Roger,
To be honest: it took me a night's sleep to be able to comment on the match well balanced from a realistic perspective. As a tennis player one knows very soon, often even before the start of the match, if you have a realistic chance or not, if you feel right about your strokes and your body or not. I guess that is no different for you. I just started the recording of the match and watched the way you walked on court and reacted to the cheering of the crowd.....

Hi Roger,

I’m really disappointed with your performance last night, it’s not your best tennis at all, it was really hard to see you losing to Nadal so easily! My heart aches. You are the greatest tennis player EVER… and you can do more than that, you can win more tournaments and you will Inshallah.
Wish you BEST of luck in RG...im still in love with you and with your magical tennis <3

Love you,
Taghreed

Roger you are still at the top finishing in the semi finals and finals. With all the comments I prefer to think of it as "the changing of the guard" as was said at the time of yourself and the great Pete Sampras.

You had a great tournament Roger, so do not be too disappointed to lose to Rafa. Good luck for the French. Love, Liz x

Too easy for Nadal! Absolutely mental problem for Federer. Like I said each time every time Roger needs to fix his own mental problem when facing Nadal. Roger still got touch, but hopeless when against Nadal. Too many uncharacteristic errors!

Roger ciao,

Ciao
Alessandro

HI Roger,

I really think you have a great chance at winning Roland Garros this year. I know you really got hammered today, but lets face it 32 unforced errors? I think you can beat nadal in paris, target his backhand more - it's so weak...and don't try to force shots to be shorter otherwise you will end up hitting it out! When u play against nadal on clay...make sure you are patient and especially if its a final make sure you put all your energy into long points agains him :) Good Luck at FO!
