Out in Wimbledon

26.06.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger suffered his earliest defeat at Wimbledon since losing in the first round in 2002 today. He lost his second-round match against Sergej Stakhovsky 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 5-7, 6-7(5).

"It's normal that after all of a sudden losing early, having being in Grand Slam quarter-finals 36 times, people feel it's different. But I still have plans to play for many more years to come," Roger said.

Roger started well and secured the first set in the tie-break. But Stakhovsky went on to take the second set tie-break to level. Not being able to score a break himself, our champ was broken in set three - enough for his opponent to finally take a lead in sets. Roger fell back another break in the fourth set, but this time he managed to level at 3-3. Unfortunately he did not make the points in the final tie-break, falling back 2-5 and eventually admitting defeat after just three hours of play.

It was Roger's first defeat by a player ranked outside the top 100 since losing to Richard Gasquet (ranked at 101) in Monte Carlo in 2005. He will now fall back to at least number 5 in the world rankings.

Perhaps one should remember how great Roger has always been. Whether or not he can come back and do the miracles again does not matter because he has already achieved so much no one else ever can.

Why slam Roger on his own site? I was rooting for Murray today - but it just wasn't a Wimbledon final without Roger. What's to watch in a baseline slugfest? No finesse, no impossible angle shots, no well timed and disguised killer drop shots. Ho hum. I don't care what he's ranked, I just want to watch him play. He's a husband and father and should back off if he wants to. Roger .. keep playing and even consider doubles with Tommy Haas!

One look at who is winning and it is clear. They are bigger, younger guys who hit harder, armed with big racquets that boost their power.

Look at Murray. He's considerably more muscular than he was. Which means he has more power.

If Roger wants to win more majors, he too must do the obvious. Add power. Get a new racquet. He's older, which means mobility and quickness are compromised enough to matter. ADD POWER. Sampras won majors in the end on cheap serve points, and power.

What a year at Wimbledon, SW19... It should have been a Federer vs Murray Semis in the Mens' Singles.

Marion Bartolli winning the Womens' Final, who would have thought.

There was a lot of empty seats in Court 1 during th Mens' Semis.

Changing the subject, looking at a bigger picture of life on this planet...Did you see BBC's brilliant documentary of Rise of the Continents ? Four part series. Did you know diamonds are about 3 billions years old ? It is one of the fascinating facts of t

Did Murray play any players within top 20 before getting to final? If so, he is so lucky.

Yes Roger is stubborn and stupid.
Novak and Murray deserve to be in the final.
Roger woke up
And is playing in July!!!
