Out in Hamburg

20.07.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger was defeated by Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 6-7(7), 6-7(4) in the semifinals in Hamburg today.

"He played well, he was a little more aggressive," Roger said.

Our champ took a 2-1 lead to start with, but was broken right back and had to save two set points to take the set into a tiebreaker. All looked good there as he took a 4-2 lead but did not manage to convert a set point before then dropping the set. Roger had to keep up the fight, defending break points right in his first service game. Eventually taking the set into another tiebreaker, Roger committed a series of errors before Delbonis wrapped up his win.

Next up for Roger is a trip home as he will play the tournament in Gstaad in the Swiss mountains next week.

Dear aj81, I totally agree with you, one has to enjoy the game whatever the result. However I saw him really like fighting against demons on saturday. It was not about enjoying and being simply outplayed by his Opponent (which would be perfectly acceptable). No he looked upset and concerned.

Have a good rest, focus next game. Only time can tell. Enjoying yourself is the most important at this stage of your career. I followed you up since 2003. You've done your job already. All the rest is just bonus. Relax.

So I was at the match in Hamburg and I like Roger very much but you really could see which of the two players was running more after the ball. Roger has great shots, no doubt about that but there is an obvious lack of commitment from his part. Hard to say if it was his mood, his physical shape or his motivation.

The racket change is the best thing Roger could have done. He sees he is in trouble, the others are better, he is not stubborn that he does not want to change. No he changed the racket that brought him 77 titles. How GUTSY is that !!! I am so proud of him. Of course after more than 10 years with the smaller racket, it will take time to adjust. Mark my words... in 2014 he will have gotten used to it and have adjusted it and IN 2014 HE WILL BE OLD ROGER... UNBEATABLE AND BACK TO NR 1 !!!!

Good article on the racquet change.

Since Roger became top 100 player in 1999, he has lost only 7 matches to players outside top 100. Since he became top 10 player in 2002, he has lost only 3 matches.

In comparison, Nadal lost 6 matches (No. 690, No. 147, No. 135, No. 107, No. 106, No. 100) since he became top 10 player in 2005.

Djokovic lost 3 matches (No. 319, No. 176, No. 122) since he became top 10 player in 2007.

The racquet change is very good! It’s a long-term experiment. Everybody must be patient for the next 4 months. No top player can switch to a different racquet size in mid-season with no pre-tournament practice. Nadal changed racquets in2012 and 2013 and strings in 2010 -- but only at the start of each season after much practice. Obviously Roger will go through a painful period of learning and adjustment as his shot choices, swing, timing, feel, precision, confidence, etc. are affected.
