Out in Hamburg

20.07.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 3

Roger was defeated by Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis 6-7(7), 6-7(4) in the semifinals in Hamburg today.

"He played well, he was a little more aggressive," Roger said.

Our champ took a 2-1 lead to start with, but was broken right back and had to save two set points to take the set into a tiebreaker. All looked good there as he took a 4-2 lead but did not manage to convert a set point before then dropping the set. Roger had to keep up the fight, defending break points right in his first service game. Eventually taking the set into another tiebreaker, Roger committed a series of errors before Delbonis wrapped up his win.

Next up for Roger is a trip home as he will play the tournament in Gstaad in the Swiss mountains next week.

Dear Roger. You made it to the semis and treated us to some beautiful tennis. The match was so close. 2 sets, 2 TBs, lost by 2 pts each ! so close ! You came to Hamburg to test yourself and your new racquet and you did .Be proud Rogi and stay confident. You're the best of the best and that will never be taken away from you !One step at a time, I know good things will happen in Gstaad. Hold onto that strong belief and march on beautiful champ! We love you always.God bless you !

Sorry about the loss today but you can see from pictures what physical discomfort you were in. Don't push yourself if you are not up to it. Nothing is worth suffering with a back issue. Best off not playing and doing some rehab before subjecting yourself to more injury.
We will always be here to cheer you on!

Sorry, Roger,

God cannot give you all.
You must be getting used to the new racket. It looks much bigger and I love the black frame.
Keep improving with it.

Love forever,
takeko

I wish from the bottom of my heart that your back will recover and that we will get the chance to watch the real Roger Federer play his beautiful game once again. Like so many millions of fans I know there is nothing like it and there will be nothing like it in our lifetime. So if I could have just one wish I would wish for you to have a healed back and play as well as only you can. I wish you a good recovery and a very good time in Gstaad.

Your fan for better and for worse,

J

I can't help feeling terribly sad and worried for you and I am almost glad that there are pictures of your strapped/taped back on the internet, so that everybody can see that there was something not quite right with you. You are to be admired that you didn't blame your loss to a qualifier on your physical condition, but to your fans it was crystal clear that it was no the real Roger Federer that we watched on court today, only someone who looked very much like him.

Today he clearly was fitter than you was. You were a step slow, didn't make enough first serves, couldn't put pressure on him, so he could play even more freely than he already would have, having nothing to lose as the underdog. It was clear to me, that it was you who was the underdog in that match, only because of the fact that you were not physically fit.
Once again I admired you greatly for the way you tried your best out there, as you allways do and allways have done.

I even noticed that you were breathing heavily, not because you had just run lot, but like someone who was in pain. But you managed to win that match and I admired you greatly for doing so under the circumstances.
Roger, after that I feared that if things wouldn't get better over night, you wouldn't be able to beat that on fire qualifier Delbonis, who proved he was not just a qualifier in his earlier rounds. I watched him against Verdasco and I must say I was impressed by him.
