Roger defeated by Rafa

17.08.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger showed a strong match against Rafael Nadal in Cincinnati, but eventually had to admit a close 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 defeat.

"I'm happy with my progress along the way," Roger said. "Could have won tonight; should have won tonight. Who knows? But at the end, I think Rafa's confidence and the way he's playing at the moment got him through."

Our champ was in good shape, he varied his serve excellently and moved very well. After winning the first set, at 4-4 in the second, he was just 6 points away from winning the match. He made the 27-year-old Spaniard work for it from beginning to end, when he saved four match points before falling.

As defending champion Roger will drop over 800 points - making him fall back to number 7 behind Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro in the rankings.

Yeah, there are no easy draws. As always, I trust Roger will take it one match at a time, not to look too far ahead in the draw. If he gets to the QF, that will be good for his points for London qualification with 360 points. If he meets RN in the QF, he will be the underdog, yeah but I expect him to give it his all to get a win, drawing confidence/inspiration from his performance at Cincy. Good luck Roger for the USO.

Just now saw the draw , Roger to face Rafa in QF, otherwise, the draw looks quite comfortable for our champ ---

Thank you so much for that link. I wish Beatrez a long happy life now to enjoy tennis and remember her time with Roger. Talk about a tearjerker of a story. I am pleased to have seen that, she looks a lovely person and Roger, was just Roger! Lovely man!

OK, so officially this is the worst draw in the history of draws

I somehow doubt that Ferrer will make it from that Quarter. R3 Gulbis, R4 Janowicz, QF Gasquet/Raonic. Murray somehow always gets tough draw at USO.. But he plays well with that draw. This time he may overcome Berdych in a tight match.. Nole-DelPo will be a cracker again. Nole may have slight edge. Isner has a good chance to show his potential in that R4. So does Harrison in R1. Not sure how Verdasco turns up. He may give a fight.. For our Champ, Sam may give a little test in R3 with that serve.

Reasonable draw, I believe Nadal is not comfortable facing Roger in QF. He knows that this is Roger's surface and the performance Roger showed last week was no fluke; coming out from injury without the ideal match practice and showed his old self.
I wish Roger all the best and believe that he will go all the way...the 18th slam is here for a taking.
