Roger and No. 1s honoured

26.08.2013 | Off Court, Starseite 3

Before the start of the US Open, an unprecedented gathering of No. 1s took place at the ATP Heritage programme's No. 1 Celebration in New York. The event marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Emirates ATP Rankings. Ilie Nastase, who became the first ATP World No. 1 on 23 August 1973, was present to be honoured on the night, along with successors John Newcombe, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Marcelo Rios, Carlos Moya, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and of course Roger.

Roger thanked those that came before him, like childhood idol Stefan Edberg. "It was important for me to have someone to look up to. I know there's been a huge sacrifice at the players' level, just this generation and the players sitting here tonight, and even before that. We've put such huge effort in the game, and that's a platform we can enjoy today."

You are a true great among the #1s, with a couple of records that are not surpassed by anyone. (Sampras' name was left out accidentally.) Dear Roger, some are being overdetermined. Severals goals are hypergoals and hypertargeted. Play with your inner fire, calm assurance, and know that you can achieve what you want. See the patterns of play, and foil them. You know how" first, this first step. Godspeed and luck! You are the Greatest Ever: and that's no flattery or bias. Intuition is important!

Dear Roger,
I want you to know that I am very proud of you, and it will never change. Being your fan is just an amazing feeling. In my home country it is 1:43am now, but I am not tired, how could I be? You are going to play and I am going to watch you :) I wish you good luck, it is a first round match, it is always important. Know that you will show us some beautiful tennis. I will be cheering for you! Lots of love!

Roger, as Pete Sampras has said, you have to remember who you are; you have to keep confident, and, of course, healthy, and do not allowed being asked about your retirement. That word is not in your vocabulary until you decide it. Good luck and God bless you!!! Go for it, Roger!!!

Fancy F. Avignon! Very nice ! Good for you !!

That YouTube clip of the lads splitting their sides is the funniest thing ever !! I have seen it many times, Roger is so childlike when he gets the giggles it's wonderful !

He seems so goofy and almost quiet innocent, yet, when he steps out on court he becomes this powerful, brilliant Maestro!! All part of his genius I guess !

Why was Pospisil's match (potential R2 opponent) not scheduled at the same timings as Nadal's match? Nadal won't spare if this happens to him (he was angry at RG R2 with this kind of scheduling)...
