Roger and No. 1s honoured

26.08.2013 | Off Court, Starseite 3

Before the start of the US Open, an unprecedented gathering of No. 1s took place at the ATP Heritage programme's No. 1 Celebration in New York. The event marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Emirates ATP Rankings. Ilie Nastase, who became the first ATP World No. 1 on 23 August 1973, was present to be honoured on the night, along with successors John Newcombe, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Marcelo Rios, Carlos Moya, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and of course Roger.

Roger thanked those that came before him, like childhood idol Stefan Edberg. "It was important for me to have someone to look up to. I know there's been a huge sacrifice at the players' level, just this generation and the players sitting here tonight, and even before that. We've put such huge effort in the game, and that's a platform we can enjoy today."

cont
was to see all of the No 1s on the stage together--several were not able to attend but sadly Brad was not there to be with you all. He was too young to leave this earth--however, he will remain in our memories.
I am very happy to hear you state that you back has fully recovered.
Wishing you all of the very best for your 1st round tomorrow am

Kindest regards
Margaret

Hello Roger
What a lovely photo of you & Stefan, not only both handsome, but true gentlemen of tennis--we need more of you.!
One of our very good sports commentators-[he eats, drinks and sleeps EVERY sport]gave us an excellent history of Brad Drewett last week. Here in Australia, as well as the tennis world in general, Brad was well respected and liked when he played, then a short stint with commenatator and course his involvement with the administration of the ATP. One of his dreams

Congratulations, Rog, and all the other No. 1s. Stefan Edberg was my idol before you. You are both classy gentlemen and I also liked his serve and volley game. This photo is priceless. Good luck tonite. I hope the weather cooperates. By the way, I bought the New York Times yesterday (which I never do) to get the magazine where you are the cover for their USO edition. Great photo. :-)

It is so wonderful. Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi are missing. I wish the two were present to enjoy the event and seeing again Roger.

Love forever, Roger.

I would love to watch it, but I have to go to work. Will record it and watch it when I get home instead.

Then on the weekend when I have all the time in the world to watch it during the Australian daytime, they schedule Roger to play in the US day time which in early morning here. :-(
