Roger and No. 1s honoured

26.08.2013 | Off Court, Starseite 3

Before the start of the US Open, an unprecedented gathering of No. 1s took place at the ATP Heritage programme's No. 1 Celebration in New York. The event marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Emirates ATP Rankings. Ilie Nastase, who became the first ATP World No. 1 on 23 August 1973, was present to be honoured on the night, along with successors John Newcombe, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Marcelo Rios, Carlos Moya, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and of course Roger.

Roger thanked those that came before him, like childhood idol Stefan Edberg. "It was important for me to have someone to look up to. I know there's been a huge sacrifice at the players' level, just this generation and the players sitting here tonight, and even before that. We've put such huge effort in the game, and that's a platform we can enjoy today."

SHIV08SPYDER,
Even if they play like DelPo, it won't affect that lefty you-know-who in the next match... He is an exception... He can win big matches with one leg... Nobody in the universe can beat him when he is fully healthy... LOL

But I love the "Roger-curse": If you beat me, you will ALWAYS lose your next match (no matter what round), of course unless you are Rafa or Novak !!! - you are so right ! :)

I don't know if you are a Rafa fan, but I am not at all.
I don't like seeing him win, because of the d..., but I will not get into that here.

And you are so right about Delpo. I call it the "Delpo-curse": If you beat me, you will never win Olympic Gold or a GS !!!

But I love the "Roger-curse": If you beat me, you will ALWAYS lose your next match (no matter what round), of course unless you are Rafa or Novak !!!

Let's hope Pospisil wins in the 5th, I doubt Dutra Silva will make Nadal break a sweat. But these young guys need to develop more grit so they can stick it to the top guys, even if they lose, they must be like Delpo, even though he loses, he takes your energy away with him. So you buggered next match.

Harrison was just rushing everything, trying to hit winners of balls that you can't. If he just played normal tennis he could've had a break back. But the unforced errors when he had Rafa 0-30 and 15-30 were just annoying to watch and once I saw that he got broken for 2-1 in second set, just like the first set, I was like, join the list of 'close but no cigar'. Rafa is vulnerable in early rounds of grandslams more than ever, just need a Rosol/ Darcis determination and you can beat him.
