A really solid first week

01.09.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger enjoyed a confident 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 win over Adrian Mannarino (ATP 63) in the third round to round off a great first week at the US Open.

Roger faced just a single break point in the entire match against the Frenchman and was obviously very pleased with his performance after 81 minutes of play. "There's always a lot of pressure coming out here on this court to perform, because you never know if you're going to play well. Tonight was one of those nights."

Roger will now play the round of the last sixteen against Tommy Robredo (ATP 22). Our champ leads the head-to-head 10-0 and could then be in for a quarter-final against Rafael Nadal in the quarter

Not a good day for Roger. The strategy nor metal toughness was there and too many unforced errors. Instead of trading short backhand cross-court, try to go down the line after pushing Robredo wide. The forehand did not help, and trying to paint the lines ending wide or out. Hope our champ will regroup, and maybe rest and now really start playing with the new racket. Keep our hope for 2014. Go champ.

It's a shame that Roger has to win or retire to please some people. That is selfish and so cruel to pressure Roger like that. Robredo is right at Roger's age and just had the match of his life...why can't people just let Roger enjoy what he loves instead of kicking him while he's down? Everyone loves you when you're at the top...but don't lose or they go cry and say retire...please ignore them, Roger. Enjoy the sport you love and your career...you don't owe them anything!

PART 4:

RF: "Every time like he comes you play where he's standing, and, I mean, it just ended up being a bad combination of many things today. So I've definitely got to go back to work and come back stronger, you know, get rid of this loss now as quick as I can, forget about it, because that's not how I want to play from here on. I want to play better. I know I can. I showed it the last few weeks, that there is that level. So today was pretty frustrating"

PART 3:

Q. You're known as such a great closer, 2 for 16 on break points.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, that was a great close. No, it wasn't a very good close today.

Q. No. Could you talk about your difficulty on break points? Secondly, were you overall surprised by your performance today, by the result?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, I think I explained enough, you know. We have a forehand here, end up losing the point like three times."

PART 2:

RF: "The story of my life: when I lose, people are shellshocked to see me play this way. If I win, it's the best thing. Yeah, I can see that. But there's no doubt about it, I'm trying hard out there trying to make it work. Sometimes it just doesn't happen."

PART 1
RF: "Maybe. Look, then again, it's always been a fine line, especially in the beginning of my career when I didn't have the results to back me up. People thought, Did he even try? Does he care much? Like, He can play so well. Is it so terrible? Now, with the results, I know you don't believe that so much. That's the good thing."
