Roger wins first match

09.10.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger has booked a spot in the round of the last 16 in Shanghai after a 6-4, 6-3-victory over Andreas Seppi.

Roger only encountered a few problems in the opening phase of the match when he was  broken by Seppi to fall back 2-3. But Roger immediately responded, secured a re-break and went on to win the first set without any further difficulties. He opened the second set in style, breaking his opponent to jump to a 2-0 lead and then take home the match after 74 minutes of play.

Next up is Gaël Monfils (ATP 42) in the round of the last 16. Roger leads the head-to-head 6-1.

Boting - even though he loves the game, these losses are on the brink of becoming embarrassing, each loss must feel like a hole punched right through his self-esteem. And he said he will always have high expectations of himself, that won't change but will he settle for consistently achieving below his own expectations? Those are like daggers to his psyche, scarring even, only a cracking 2014 can save him from possible depression.

all those analyses will not help Federer at all because it is a fait a compli
that Federer is playing tennis these days for reasons that he loves the game
so his approach too matches is all different than in the past .

"I think Novak and Rafa are doing a happy dance together in the lockerroom...."

This comment really made me laugh for the first time after Roger lost. Thanks, KEMNA!
Roger definitely played better today than against Robredo and Seppi. It was just that Monfils is a higher quality opponent and Fed had to be sharper on some key moments.
It would have been such a boost to win this tough match somehow. DAMN! :(

God helps those who help themselves, and right now Federer is his own worst enemy. I've seen him play when he wass out of form and it wasn't bad, in 2009 and 2011, now it is bad. Red flags for sure, not Chinese flags, but warning ones are there and Federer has to change or risk a nightmare end to his career.

it doesn't really matter to me if roger goes to wtf. he already has the record. i don't wait with anticipation anymore for matches. i just look at scores after the matches with no emotion at all. he is the greatest ever. i love him always. there is no disappointment for me now, because he has been so great for so long. for whatever reason it is just not happening for roger this year. so there it is. only he knows if this is going to get better. whatever happens my love to him always.

I think these losses will eventually break down Federer's Wall of stubborness that is preventing him from adopting the most efficient strategies such as standing further back on return, hitting approach shots in the open court or short-angled volleys, drop shots that are on a surprise basis not as a shot of a confused person, and lastly using a racquet that is relevant to the age of tennis now, not regress with a racquet that is now widely considered a liability.

"This year, I feel it might be the right thing, it would give him some friendly match practise without serious pressure to win, also a good way of practising with a new racquet!" Good point CJM!
