Roger wins first match

09.10.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger has booked a spot in the round of the last 16 in Shanghai after a 6-4, 6-3-victory over Andreas Seppi.

Roger only encountered a few problems in the opening phase of the match when he was  broken by Seppi to fall back 2-3. But Roger immediately responded, secured a re-break and went on to win the first set without any further difficulties. He opened the second set in style, breaking his opponent to jump to a 2-0 lead and then take home the match after 74 minutes of play.

Next up is Gaël Monfils (ATP 42) in the round of the last 16. Roger leads the head-to-head 6-1.

The conundrum for him and us, is how can he get match practise sufficient for him to start believing in himself again? Last year I thought his expo matches at the end of the year was too much for him after such a big year with the Olympics. I was seriously worried for him, and this year, may be the result. This year, I feel it might be the right thing, it would give him some friendly match practise without serious pressure to win, also a good way of practising with a new racquet!

Bad luck today Roger. Question for you- Why do you stand so far up when returning serve? Why don't you take a step back and return from where most of the other top players return from? The lack of balls you put in play reduces your chances to put pressure on your opponents, and in turn is affecting your own service games. Players like Novak/ Nadal know that they will put returns/ balls in play, so they don't worry so much about getting broken.

We are very thankful to Andy for withdrawing from WTF :)
Now Roger has to secure one title from the next two tourneys
Not possible but also not impossible.

We know what he is gonna say in the post match interview. "Full Credit to Monfils he was better player than me we should give him credit, I kinda self destructed, had my chances but could capitalize"

There is definitely something wrong with his game and coaching staff. He has just lost killing instinct. very disappointing stuff

I knew it would be difficult, he has been away from the courts for too long, but I did not expect that. When he took the second set, I thought, yes, we will scrape through, just need a little luck come his way and perhaps a little self belief will help settle him.
I am so sad. I think the doubles are now good, if he can lift his spirits and play, at least it will give him match practise. Perhaps at home at Basel, he will be able to settle, get into a rhythm and come through. I do hope so!

Well everyone, thank you for your company tonight. I would have liked a different result, but that is life and sport in general. See you again shortly.

Well I will stay positive for a while because i know Roger can't have become a lesser player in such a short time. However, it's results like this that that make me scratch my head. Roger must have a real problem with his self confidence because he has been playing rather badly this year and that's a fact. If he gains some confidence, he will beat players like this. 2014 will have to be much better from the start otherwise he should consider stopping. I hope not!
