Swiss Indoors, Basel

20.10.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

The tennis event in Roger's home-town Basel is about to start, with our champ taking the third seeding. Roger's first opponent is Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (ATP 60), who he clearly beat at this year’s US Open. In the following round he will either meet 47-ranked Denis Istomin or 48-ranked Horacio Zeballos. Roger's designated semi-final opponent is Tomas Berdych (ATP 6).

“I’m just going to focus on trying to play well,” Roger said. “I’m not too focused on the points system. So I just got to move along. I can still finish strong. I believe I can and there’s not much time left. I’m looking forward to Basel now. That’s the next step for me, and hopefully that’s going to go well for me.”

Well I think Mirka has nothing to fear! Roger will "exit" after the next Olympics in 2016 when the twins will only be 7 or 8, no problem! That interview was in 2004 so she obviously hadn't envisaged having children for a good while with Roger.

Good luck, Roger! :) :) :)

Obviously things have changed since those interviews, but I do believe Roger must feel a sense of not having achieved as much as he could or should have. It's something I myself feel as a Federer fan (I'm sure many of us do). It must be this hunger that keeps him going.

He has been consistently saying that for the last 2-3 years, which is reassuring.
Interestingly, in his biography by René Stauffer way back in 2005 or '06, he said about the 2012 Olympics, "That would be the ideal moment to consider making my exit."

In another part of the book, Mirka is quoted in a 2004 interview as saying: "but when I have a child, I want the father to be around to play soccer, hockey and tennis with him or her instead of being away for 40 weeks at tournaments."

@Fancyfree,

Oh wow, the schedule for tomorrow is out!
Roger plays Mannarino in exactly 24 hours and 30 minutes!

Tsonga being knocked out in SF certainly helps on WTF race. Gasquet won, but he really struggled (it seems) against a low ranked player. Running out of Gas-quet(!) I think, so that will help.
Paris is key: we know you can finish strong our champ and set yourself up for a great 2014, love you, xxxxxxxxxxxx
