Swiss Indoors, Basel

20.10.2013 | Tennis, Starseite 1

The tennis event in Roger's home-town Basel is about to start, with our champ taking the third seeding. Roger's first opponent is Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (ATP 60), who he clearly beat at this year’s US Open. In the following round he will either meet 47-ranked Denis Istomin or 48-ranked Horacio Zeballos. Roger's designated semi-final opponent is Tomas Berdych (ATP 6).

“I’m just going to focus on trying to play well,” Roger said. “I’m not too focused on the points system. So I just got to move along. I can still finish strong. I believe I can and there’s not much time left. I’m looking forward to Basel now. That’s the next step for me, and hopefully that’s going to go well for me.”

Basel is an interesting tournament for Roger. Ever since his first unexpected wildcard in 1998, it was one of his top priorities to win, but one obstacle after another prevented him from winning till 2006.
But since 2006, he has 5 Championships and 2 Runner-Up performances there. It should be fully expected that he'll be a strong contender this year. Indoors really suit Roger's aggressive style.

Hey Fancyfree.

Ferrer's loss doesn't affect Roger at all since David is securely ahead in the ATP Race. Tsonga's slump helps. Roger's main threats now are Gasquet and Tsonga, and he can still afford to be overtaken by one of them.
Also, Stan is only 5 points ahead of Roger, so there's one guy Roger should likely overtake with a Quarters or Semis appearance in Paris.

Yes and beat Ferrer. Tsonga too has failed to reach a final elsewhere today so does these two results make Roger's path to the ATP Finals easier?

Dimitrov wins his first ATP title! Watching him play almost makes me miss Roger just a little bit less!
Hope the master and the apprentice get to play in Basel!
