Roger defeated in final

27.10.2013 | Tennis

Roger showed great tennis in today's final at the Swiss Indoors but was defeated by Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7(3), 6-2, 4-6.

Roger fought hard and both players displayed a terrific match. Our champ admitted a break in game number eight but came right back with a re-break to love. Unfortunately Del Potro proved the better player in the tie-breaker, taking the opening set. Roger jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second set and scored another break at the end of the set, wrapping it up neatly. The start into the decider was very unlucky for Roger. He was serving for the game at 40-15 but committed a total of three double-faults to lose the advantage and the game. Not able to score a break himself, Roger had to admit defeat after 2 hours 20 minutes.

Roger will play the tournament in Paris next week. He needs to win one single match there in order to qualify for the World Tour Finals.

I can definitely tell you played amazing. Not just today, but the whole tournament. The lion is back and ready to set the record straight. Keep up the confidence. You are doing great. And this is just the beginning, a little spark in the darkness. Sooner or later this spark will grow into a flame. And you will shine again, my dear. All the best in Paris. I will always be cheering for you. Xxxxxxxxx

GRAN TORNEO, MAESTRO!!! Gracias!!! MÁS ÉXIITOS ENPARIS Y LONDRES!!!

This was really a win for both of you. Wonderful to see the Roger we know and love returning - wonderful match and what a fantastic and well earned reception from the Basel crowd. I'm sure you'll now be going to the WTF - wouldn't be the same without you.
Rest well and enjoy the rest of the season - can't wait to see you play again! xx

The second set was magnificent, Roger, and you played so well throughout the match too. Certainly with conviction, aggression you will do really well in Paris, and get to London for the WTF.

Thanks for a great tournament. Great to see our Lion King roar back.

What an improvement this week has showed ! Roger is now able to extricate himself from tight situations against lesser players (Istomin, Dimitrov and Pospivil) and, even more importantly, compete on equal terms against a player with whom he had some great tussles last year ! More improvement on 1st serve is needed but today's percentage was up to 60%, best for some time. He needs to maintain this in Paris, and I will look forward to London.
True fans will ignore the negative comments.

Well that was a fantastic match Rogi. I'm sure you will take a lot of positives from this tournament - we were treated to some brilliantly magical shots from you. You almost had him and it would have been wonderful for you to win: so very close - same number of points won!! Good to see that serve and your scintillating forehand are back.

Always knew that the magic would return; all you needed was match practice. Looking forward to Paris...every luck to our champ there, love+big hugs, xxxxxxxxx

Grande partita. 96 punti a testa. Grande equilibrio. Mi ha colpito molto la tua condizione fisica, veramente eccellente. Peccato per quel primo game del terzo set ma non importa. Per me sei sempre il migliore. Credo che a Bercy potrai fare un grande torneo. In bocca la lupo grande Maestro.
