Roger defeated in final

27.10.2013 | Tennis

Roger showed great tennis in today's final at the Swiss Indoors but was defeated by Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7(3), 6-2, 4-6.

Roger fought hard and both players displayed a terrific match. Our champ admitted a break in game number eight but came right back with a re-break to love. Unfortunately Del Potro proved the better player in the tie-breaker, taking the opening set. Roger jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second set and scored another break at the end of the set, wrapping it up neatly. The start into the decider was very unlucky for Roger. He was serving for the game at 40-15 but committed a total of three double-faults to lose the advantage and the game. Not able to score a break himself, Roger had to admit defeat after 2 hours 20 minutes.

Roger will play the tournament in Paris next week. He needs to win one single match there in order to qualify for the World Tour Finals.

Dear Roger,
That was I very good match. The luck seemed to go Juan Martin's way at a couple of key times, but you really played some nice tennis this week. You're right, your game is coming along, hopefully it'll be in full force in Paris & London!

It's always lovely to see you play. The Swiss fans gave you lots of support & a well-deserved standing ovation. You are loved there at home, and all over the world too.

We'll be cheering for you in Paris (& later on in London ~ you'll make it!)

I watched the whole match last night, two observations, 1. the cord ball by DP during the 1st set tie-break which gave him a mini-break (then 2-0) was the turning point of the whole match, this year our Champ indeed lacked a bit of luck; 2. the long standing ovation reflected on the one hand how much the fans, Swiss or otherwise, loved Rog and, also they might worry that next year Rog would not return, it's in any event touching and emtional, that's explains why Rog is incomparable and splendid.

A great match from Roger and Del Potro. It was great to see Roger's magic back again. He fully deserves the standing ovation the Basel crowd gave to him. Good luck for Paris Roger.

Dear ROGER Good to see that your backhand has improved a lot Your forehand has yet to return and your serve is lacking consistency I think when you play a offensive aggressive game like yours your shots must be absolutely precise and perfect and there should be no room for error where two or three imperfect shots can determine the outcome of the match I hope you will return with your devastating forehand into paris which is missing this season Good luck
