Roger defeated in final

27.10.2013 | Tennis

Roger showed great tennis in today's final at the Swiss Indoors but was defeated by Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7(3), 6-2, 4-6.

Roger fought hard and both players displayed a terrific match. Our champ admitted a break in game number eight but came right back with a re-break to love. Unfortunately Del Potro proved the better player in the tie-breaker, taking the opening set. Roger jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second set and scored another break at the end of the set, wrapping it up neatly. The start into the decider was very unlucky for Roger. He was serving for the game at 40-15 but committed a total of three double-faults to lose the advantage and the game. Not able to score a break himself, Roger had to admit defeat after 2 hours 20 minutes.

Roger will play the tournament in Paris next week. He needs to win one single match there in order to qualify for the World Tour Finals.

Haha Fancyfree...@mike66, tough call...generally (not that one particular game of 3 double faults...unfortunate) I thought Roger's serve was well and truly back in action. Well done our maestro. A fine performance at Basel. You brought me so much joy over the week thou not much sleep and again this week to watch you in the early hrs at Bercy...you are sooooooo worth it.

Your first serve still failed you when you needed it most. If your first serve had worked well, you would not have lost, however close it may have been

....makes him the all time champ. As they said there are many champions but not many idols for the sport as Roger is. Bravo Roger!! Good luck in Paris and London!!

The ovation was a magical moment, I had tears in my eyes also. Roger made again such beautiful shots, I feel always so lucky to be living in this era to witness his tennis and just wish for him to play on forever. As the Argentinean commentators said who were also very emotional and who always call him "su majestad" ("his majesty"), he is Maradona, he is Pele, he is Michael Jordan, he is the greatest ever in tennis and moreover than that, he is a gentlemen, a great person and that is what ...

You have made a good point. We were querying some line calls. Also there were a lot of let's called which no-one could see a problem with. We had the impression the wind caused by the ball going across was setting of the warning. Roger said something in one game but it was frustrating. Roger served better than I have seen him for a very long time. It was very unfortunate he had the lapse in the 3rd set with the double faults which cost him the match. So unlucky.
