47 titles and going strong
Roger today completed an almost perfect week by winning back the Dubai Open title; extending his career-best run of consecutive wins to 41. He defeated Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny (ATP 18) this evening in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3.
Roger’s start into the 60th final of his career was everything but ideal. He had to face a break right in the beginning but fought back to take home the first set after 41 minutes, then going on to showing a great performance in the second set. "I had a bit of a rough start here, and struggled in the early rounds. And Mikhail made a good start and I had to react," Roger said.
"But I am full of confidence and am on a great run. I did react and then my game came together nicely."
Roger has now equalled Björn Borg's mark of 41 consecutive victories – Borg was even present to watch Roger play today. Roger also remains on course to equal Guillermo Vilas's all-time record of 46 successive victories at the next tournament, in Indian Wells, starting next week. "You always try to make the best of it," said Roger. "Of course I usually play well in Indian Wells, but I will have to be at my best [to equal the record]."
