A solid start

01.01.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger opened the new year with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Jarkko Nieminen in Brisbane.

Our champ took a 3-2 lead after a first break in the opening set. He was even more efficient in the second set, going up 4-0 and eventually securing the victory after 68 minutes of play.

Roger will now play Australia's Marinko Matosevic (ATP 61) - the two have never met so far.

In the doubles, Roger has also advanced to the next round alongside Nicolas Mahut, defeating Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau (HOL/ROU) 7-5, 7-6(5). They will now meet Jérémy Chardy/Grigor Dimitrov (FRA/BUL) or Colin Fleming/Ross Hutchins (GBR).

That's a good start not only of the tournament but of the year!!!
Each day a win, soon 2 per day?

I would say that was a good doubles win for Roger and Nicolas. I thought Dimitrov/Chardy would be a strong pair and I was nervous. As the doubles comprise of a lot of pairs who do not always play doubles and not necessarily together, it is difficult to judge, until the end, who is the strongest pair and makes the rankings meaningless. Hopefully, the strongest pair will be Roger and Nicolas! Meanwhile, congratulations on a good win Roger and Nicolas! Keep it up.
