A solid start

01.01.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger opened the new year with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Jarkko Nieminen in Brisbane.

Our champ took a 3-2 lead after a first break in the opening set. He was even more efficient in the second set, going up 4-0 and eventually securing the victory after 68 minutes of play.

Roger will now play Australia's Marinko Matosevic (ATP 61) - the two have never met so far.

In the doubles, Roger has also advanced to the next round alongside Nicolas Mahut, defeating Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau (HOL/ROU) 7-5, 7-6(5). They will now meet Jérémy Chardy/Grigor Dimitrov (FRA/BUL) or Colin Fleming/Ross Hutchins (GBR).

Nearly done now. I am glad Roger has made it a short one. He needs his strength and stamina for tomorrow when the temperatures are set to soar into the 40's C.

Roger breaks him after 4 deuces finally...Matosevic is getting really frustrated by his performance and Rogi's peRFection

I do feel sympathy for Matosevic, however I do believe it will make him a better player for the experience. It will also help him with his nerves on the big stage. I am hopeful that he will be able to take his place in the Davis Cup team because of this experience.
