A solid start

01.01.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger opened the new year with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Jarkko Nieminen in Brisbane.

Our champ took a 3-2 lead after a first break in the opening set. He was even more efficient in the second set, going up 4-0 and eventually securing the victory after 68 minutes of play.

Roger will now play Australia's Marinko Matosevic (ATP 61) - the two have never met so far.

In the doubles, Roger has also advanced to the next round alongside Nicolas Mahut, defeating Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau (HOL/ROU) 7-5, 7-6(5). They will now meet Jérémy Chardy/Grigor Dimitrov (FRA/BUL) or Colin Fleming/Ross Hutchins (GBR).

I can see Matosevic is really trying...but he's caught up in Rogers magic.

My sympathy for poor Matosevic. The boy is looking totally dejected and hopeless

I agree. Luckily Matosevic is actually a nice Aussie and actually acknowledges that Roger is that much better than him. Unlike the other two Aussies that the Australian media hype up far too much.

Fed is way to perfect for Matosevic

CJM, I can't blame Roger for not wanting to hang around. I live in Brisbane and it has been absolutely scorching here. I would like to see Roger get it over and done with quickly also as tomorrow is going to be 41 degrees C. Yikes.
