Final vs. Hewitt

04.01.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger has booked a spot in the Brisbane final after a 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 win over Jérémy Chardy (ATP 34).

Roger broke the Frenchman in the second game of the match, taking a 2-0 lead which he maintained to take the set. Neither of the players managed to score a break in the second set and it was Chardy who eventually claimed the set in the tiebreak (3-7). Roger secured another break towards the end of the decider, taking a 5-3 lead and then wrapping up the victory on his serve to love.

Roger will now meet an old rival - Lleyton Hewitt (ATP 60) - in Sunday's final.

Roger had already played Jérémy Chardy in the doubles the day before, Roger and Nicolas Mahut defeated Chardy and Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 11-9 in a tough match.

This could be the pivotal game of the match. Roger is moving much better and staying in the long rallies.

Roger's first break point! C'mon Rog!

First comfortable hold for Roger. Then, Deuce on Hewitt's serve.
I am 100% sure it's a back niggle. He's still hitting the ball beautifully but is very cautious in movement.
Looks like he might be in pain and trying to avoid a major injury.

I seem to remember having back problems at the start of the Olympics year and even pulled out of a tournament, Quatar, I think. He was then ok. This is bad news though and I hope he does not try to ignore it in his usual fashion and keep on playing with it!
