Basel: the draw

20.10.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger will be playing in his hometown Basel this week. He has captured the title at 'his' tournament five times so far.

He will start his quest for a sixth title against Gilles Muller (ATP 53). The two have met four times so far with Roger winning all of the matches - including the quarter-final of the US Open in 2009.

In the following round, Roger could cross the path of Jerzy Janowicz (ATP 36) before playing a possible quarter-final against Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 11). And then the semis could mean a clash between the two Davis Cup teammates, Roger and Stan Wawrinka.

Casper, that's because Cilic won a grand slam (US Open).
One of the spots for the Tour Finals is reserved for the top ranked slam winner between the ranks of 9 to 20.
So Cilic either qualifies by being in the top 8 or by being the top slam winner in 9-20. That's how he's assured of qualifying.

Cilic qualified with only 4150 while Nishikori has 4265

I was assuming I would get to see Dimi in the next round! It is interesting that the big news of today is of two 17 year olds. I did not think Dimi would run into trouble. What worries me is we are running out of people to take out Nadal. Having said that it would be big news if a 17 year old could defeat him! I did not watch all of Nadal's match, I had seen enough and chose to go for a bathroom break so I was ready for Roger. I think Roger is more than capable of destroying Nadal at the moment!

I did not stay for the Dimi match. Because Nadal won quickly we had to wait for an hour to watch Roger. Then because he finished early, there was an hour wait for the Dimi match to begin. Why could they not just start early? The matches go on far too late anyway and they start late in the day. It was gone midnight last night and people have to leave early to catch bus/tram/train. I would have liked to have seen Chuidinelli/Lammer play doubles but not hang around until 10pm and more.

Thanks for the report, CJM!
Looks like the peculiarity of the day continues!

Alexander Zverev has Dimitrov in trouble! Another 17-year old. This would be a truly remarkable scalp if he wins.

As for Roger! You do not get a lot of Roger for your money, do you?! I hope no-one blinked, went to the bathroom, made tea, you would have missed him! I am happy with quality over quantity, just as well! I might have found a reason. Basel FC has a big match on. Bet he is watching during his massage time!! What can I say about Roger? He worried us on his first service game, but after that he was just magic. He was just Roger, beautiful game, handsome guy, amusing and happy and he was magic!
