Roger secures Swiss lead

31.01.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger did not have to dig too deep to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead over Serbia, defeating Ilija Bozoljac (ATP 268) in the first-round tie of the Davis Cup in Novi Sad today.

"Ilija was playing well, especially in the second set," Roger said. "It was a tough game, it could have been one set all."

Roger wrapped up the match in under two hours. He only fell behind in the second set when he broke back to regain control and finally take the set. He eventually wrapped up the win without any further problems, securing his 33rd win in his 40th Davis Cup singles match. Stan Wawrinka faced Dusan Lajovic in the second singles today.

cont....
What impressed me most with Roger especially in Brisbane was how he managed all his various commitments with the press, gala dinners, visiting wild life parks, giving time to his children and on top of everything playing both singles and doubles sometimes on the same day in soaring heat. He then went on to Melbourne to prepare for his charity function and the AO. He was always cool calm and collected.
Such a role model. I'm so proud to be a fan.

Just finished packing at 1.30am as driving back to Sydney in a few hrs. It has been the most amazing 5 weeks starting in Brisbane on 28/12 watching Roger in both singles and doubles. After Bris the big 2 day drive down to Melbourne to attend the 'Night with Roger Federer and Friends' and then the AO...feeling very sad it is all over but appreciate how lucky I have been.

CORNJERKER
There had been rumors before his match that he was carrying and injury, but nothing actually mentioned where and was not confirmed. During his Davis Cup match, towards the end he looked as if he was in pain with his right hand. He was really struggling at the end, especially with his serve. He was flexing his hand. Whether the whole arm/shoulder was affected I do not know but at one break he was holding the arm. He looked as if he did well to finish his rubber and with a win.

I have just seen an article on Tennisearth, about how Roger has always given Stan advice on how to play opponents to beat them. Rather sweet. Sorry, I do not know how to copy the link into this site, but I can tell yo about it!

Amusing advert, best bit is Roger in a bathrobe. He can come and decorate my bathroom any day! Along the same lines, does anyone follow Swissminipeople on the web? It is a cartoon of famous Swiss characters, usually sports and often features Roger and Stan. Last one was one of the better ones and featured Stan and Gilette! I discovered the Swissminipeople link on Stan's Twitter account.

The poor thing about Roger and Stan meeting up so son after Stan's triumph in Australia, was having time to discuss Rafa and what Roger has to do to beat him.
