10th anniversary no. 1

02.02.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Today marks the 10th anniversary of Roger first becoming No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on 2 February 2004. The abiding memory is of Roger dropping to his knees and raising his arms in celebration. It was 9:30 p.m. in Melbourne, on 30 January 2004, and he had just beaten his rival for No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Juan Carlos Ferrero, in the Australian Open semi-finals. The victory proved to be enough for Roger to become the world’s premier player for the first time. Roger confessed, “I wanted to enjoy this moment. You only get to be No. 1 once.”

@Yuki,

Possible, although in my view it's win-win if two siblings make it to the final of a tournament. Doesn't matter who wins.

@ILR92,

Could be! Edberg or Luthi most likely!

YEH SHATIR - EVEN WHEN VENUS WAS BIG AND SERENA WAS JUST KID SISTER, THEY WERE SAYING SERENA WAS GOING TO BE BIGGER THAN VENUS, AND THEY WERE RIGHT.

SERENA NOWADAYS CAN BEAT VENUS LEFT-HANDED BUT SHE DOESN'T WANT TO, SO BEST THING'S TO STAY OUT OF THE WAY.

SHE COULDN'T HAVE DONE MORE. OF COURSE THE OFFICIAL WORD IS "OH WOW , WHAT AN UPSET BY NO.26 CORNET".

STILL , YOU CAN'T BEAT SISTERLY LOVE, AND I BELIEVE BIG TIME IN THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY LOVE & SUPPORT - TOUGH WORLD OUT THERE.

See you, Yuki.

Just wondering out loud - Agassi had a similar dilemma in his life - he hated beating his older brother Phil who was also forced into Tennis by their father.
But he never threw a match to avoid facing Phil or lost to Phil on purpose. It has to be one of the most awkward and unpleasant things for a Tennis player to do, especially for someone as competitive as Serena!

Yuki,

If Serena wanted to not lose to Venus, couldn't she beat Cornet and then throw the match in the final? Thus assuring Venus of winning the title?

Hi everyone!

Roger's draw is not so bad. Tsonga/Del Po/Berdych could be just as dangerous in the semis.
He has 3 relatively simple matches before 2 tougher ones for the title. Allez Roger!

PS: It would be nice to see Venus win the women's title in Dubai! Just saw she beat Wozniaki yesterday - must be playing well!

THESE ARE THE FACTS:
1. VENUS HAS BEEN LOSING 1ST ROUNDS FOR A WHILE AND WON NOTHING LATELY.
2. VENUS HAS A CHRONIC TIRING DISEASE.
3. SERENA HATES BEATING HER SISTER VENUS.
4. SERENA KNEW THAT SHE WOULD MEET VENUS IF SHE BEAT CORNET.
5. IT WOULD BREAK HER HEART TO BEAT VENUS BECASUE SHE LOVES VENUS AND VENUS HAS BEEN SUFFERING FAILURE LATELY.

NOW DO YOU GET THE PICTURE? THIS SHOULD HELP: SHE LOST IN STRAIGHT SET.

I WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME - I WOULD HAVE THROWN THAT MATCH ALSO.
